Early tomorrow a.m. I head to the operating room for mutli-level cervical diskectomy and fusion, the result of an auto accident some time ago: last year was the year of the knees, this year the spine.
Never get caught between (1) a 19 year old lady with a hangover and a cell phone, tardily en route to an early class, and (b) a stationary truck, esp. while sitting in a subcompact car. I expect to be in-hospital and off-line for a week or so. Disks will be removed and replaced with donor (i.e., cadaver) bone grafts, and a titanium plate ("cage") will be mounted to vertebrae with screws to reinforce the fusion grafts. The technology is tried and true, the surgeon is young and brilliant, the institution is Yale. My odds of excellent outcome are quite high. Still, if any of you folks who helped bring the shuttle down safely want to lend a hand here, via prayers, emanations, superhuman will, or appropriate ritualistic sacrifice, I would be most appreciative.

AdminAsgara writes: Good luck and don't eat too much hospital food. Thank you for the sacrifice. I hope the infant was willing but in the present circumstance, I cannot be too fastidious . Fortunately, it is an anterior approach--the surgeon will access my cervical spine via two throat incisions, the first external and adjacent to the thyroid, the second through the tracheal wall. I anticipate the most subtle of duelling scars. Food will not be tempting. Jello shots, however, already sound marvellous. Perhaps I should have a word with the nutritionist.

Thanks, robin. I look forward to the unfolding EvC drama on my return. Who knows? Maybe I'll essay a blank verse scene while anesthetized, so the pain can be all yours

You seem to be approaching it with great fortitude. I'm a coward when it comes to hospitals.

I come from a long line of Appalachian stoics: you go to the doctor when you're too weak to stop your family from dragging you there, and you go to the hospital to die. Both my parents died from complications of "successful" surgery. My reason is dragging the rest of me into this; the inner creature is hackles up and fangs bared... Truth is, robin, I'm whistlin' past the graveyard.

Truth is, robin, I'm whistlin' past the graveyard. You mean the surgery is risky?

Having just gone through my own operational issues, and it sounds like yours could turn out conceivably worse due to its complexity, I sympathize with your position and hope everything goes well.
If my mental, perhaps spiritual, energies can do anything, hopefully they will. They will be focused in your direction in any case. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)
