Am I the only person left in the world that only listens to classical?
Baroque all the way, mate!

A lot of the stuff Amy Lee is in, the most famous being Evanescence
if you can, track down the old stuff. "origin" and the 2001-2002 demos. they are far better than anything she has officially released.

No need actually. One of the reasons I like them is because they are sort of a home town hero band from where I used to live, Little Rock. I saw them before the movie Daredevil (which more than anything set them off nationally) at a bar named Juanita's on several occasions. And we had the single "Bring me to Life" years before everybody else did it seemed. Not necessarily my favorite...but the most easily recognizable track by far.

Ill have to get pics later, we take our music pretty seriously in this house, lol. Got a pair of Kaine and Kaine speakers, I forget the model though, Ill check later. A VPI Scout turntable, with a REL T2 subwoofer...considered by most audiophiles (it seems anyways) to be the 2nd best sub available (the T1 being the best). Amazing lows and not boomy...very musical. An 18 watt Almarro amp pushes the system...I know, low wattage...but the speakers are very efficient...no need for more power...and tube amps are just amazing for music.
Worth mentioning though, I forgot another great composer. Nobuo Uematsu...my fellow geeks may recognize the name. He is the composer for Squaresoft and does all the Final Fantasy music (...I know, its sad, but its good stuff).

You're talking pre FFXII, right? Because in FFXII they changed composer (don't know why).
Some really good stuff, especially in 7 and 8. 12's music is frankly boring.

were you lucky enough to be able to get the uber-rare burned cd-r EP's and such at the shows? those are worth a lot of money these days...
what's your opinion of the band now? i have to say, the major label debut was disappointing. going from "origin" which is an amazing album, to mass-marketed and over-produced crap is kind of a let down. especially when you've heard the demo -- essentially better versions of the same songs, that retain the synth sound.
the new album is a bit better, but it's still not the same without ben in the production chair.

Dude, thanks for the link.
Wow, they are sooo dorky.

If you watch the video, make sure you get to 6:45 - 7:15.
That was pretty funny.
If you don't want to watch it and want to know what I thought was funny then "Peek" to see the hidden content that follows.

Apparently one of the more famous bootleg tapes are from that band's japan tour in the 70s.
I hope I don't have to say which band I mean.

I think Lee is carrying them now, her voice is intense. But it seems with any band, when you start releasing albums every 2 years or so it starts to tail off. Still catchy stuff, but its getting closer and closer to pop music of sorts, ala Linkin Park. One reason I love Tool so much, they dont seem to lose their epic style, and still evolve in new ways without degrading the music. I cant say the same for that many other bands, Evanescence included...still good, but songs dont seem fully developed or realized, and could use more production time, so it degrades to cookie cutter riffs and rhythms of modern New Metal and is only still unique because of Lee's voice and passion. My take anyways.

i sort of think she's been pushing her voice a little too much, lately. sounded much more natural on the earlier stuff.

Shlomo
Kind of been on a human beatbox kick today.
The invention of the breakbeat is, I think, the most fundamentally new thing to happen in music since printed notation. Thoughts?

Re: Shlomo
nah. figuring out how to transfer sound from vibrating strings (along with figuring out how to amplify sound) with magnets and copper is probably the most 'fundamental' new thing to happen in music.
All that guy is doing is using his mouth to make those sounds. Which is how different from talking? More technical, yes, but not anything 'fundamentaly' new.

Hrm, I guess I wasn't clear. I wasn't talking about what he was doing with his mouth; but the rhythms that he's doing - the breakbeats - that, in my view, are a fundamentally new thing in music.
I mean, new back in like 1970, when breakbeat music seems to have first developed from guys cutting funk breaks on their turntables.
Eh, I don't know that much about Western music history, and even less about the music of other cultures, but the modern breakbeat really seems like it doesn't have historic precursors, which is weird because, like Shlomo proves, you can do it with your mouth.
