Shhhhhhhhhhh...
You know I was intending to just come back on silently and post a couple things (I needed some physics papers), maybe every once in a while...
damn, sucked back in.
Honestly though I don't know what my posting schedule will be like. I really can drop out for days or weeks I suppose. Don't want to scare people, or raise their hopes, unnecessarily.
Anyway, it actually is nice to be back, and thanks for noticing, you too Archer.

When I started seeing someone with 6000+ posts and a name I didn't recognize posting suddenly, I quickly checked your aliases. It was a nice surprise to see your old name appear.
Welcome back!
Also, good work by you and Modulous in the Philosophy of Philosophy thread.

Glad you are back
I'm glad you're back. I was having a hard time damning God and Israel and deifying terrorists all on my own. Maybe now you can resume carrying some of the load.

I see your posts haven't gotten any shorter, and that you haven't stopped misrepresenting people.
If it really is you, perhaps we can expect an improvement in honesty levels this time around?

Silent not for long
I knew it was you all along! I hope that everything is going well in your life! Feel free to post infrequently if you must---quality trumps quantity and you know how addictive this place can be!

In an earlier post, in an out of the way thread, I noted something that probably goes better in here where more people will see it. And since I had troubles with you in the past, among others, this might be pertinent to your post here...
I guess I should take the time to say something in general, since I am "decloaking". Get rid of the elephant in the room.
Thanks to everyone who wished me well. Double that to those who went out of their way to contact me directly (to check up on me). Also, special thanks to one person in particular who shall remain nameless... for your protection at EvC, heheheh. Your thoughts and consideration (and could it have been prayers?) really helped me through the depths of a very bleak period. You cannot know how much it meant and how grateful I am.
For those that are curious it wasn't my health. That's what I suffered before this batch of disasters. Out of the frying pan, into the fire I guess. Actually here's a good metaphor, if you've ever played chutes and ladders, I hit that damn big chute right before you're set to win, the one that throws you back to square one. In sort of a Max Cady-ish scenario, I have been made to learn about loss. Big time.
Please understand that I'm returning a different person than I was before (hence the name change), and I hope people will treat me with a sense of open-mindedness... grant me pardon or amnesty for any past issues we might have had, and let's start fresh.
To this I will add that I don't know what my posting schedule will be like. I may very well pop in and out at irregular intervals determined by some obscure probability function... now that I think about it I should probably have renamed myself Quantum H, or electrodynamic H.
Anyway...
I see your posts haven't gotten any shorter, and that you haven't stopped misrepresenting people.
While I disagree with your past description of my actions, I don't want to renew that debate. I really want to start fresh and am trying very carefully to avoid any appearance of that now.
I totally apologize for the long posts which I just made recently. That is something I'm trying to end unless it is something I absolutely feel needs the length to work it out. The few long posts were accidents of my hitting submit instead of preview during my iterative process of chopping it down. In frustration, especially with our overlapping responses, I decided to leave them and move to the next post.
So at the very least you should be seeing a decreased size of posts. I hope I can reach some level of communication where you don't feel my posts involve mischaracterization of your position.
If you feel adequate communication has ended feel free to stop. I'd appreciate knowing what specific statement indicated a disrail, but you shouldn't feel obligated to waste time addressing me if I am talking past or through you. One of the biggest things standing against me now is time. I really don't have any to waste, and so when I feel a portion of debate has become pointless, I will end it from my side, with the appropriate bow out.
Again, I hope this will be satisfactory.

Welcome back.

Welcome back, Holmes! Hope things are going better for you.
I myself have been absent from this forum for a while, but a renewed interest (not entirely coincidental with your returning) has sparked inside of me, and I'll at least keep lurking here, if not posting.

Man, you really know how to kill the mood
I see your posts haven't gotten any shorter, and that you haven't stopped misrepresenting people.

Instead of throwing a tantrum while every one else is rejoicing the return of EvC's prodigal son, why not just say nothing at all, or at least reserve your scorn for an appropriate thread?

I never found Holmes's contributions anything to celebrate, except when he was arguing with Rrhain. (It's like crossing the streams, only instead of the proton packs, it's sophistry.)
But honesty, NJ, we already have the POTM threads; is all of EvC to be a mutual admiration society for a select few individuals? I would rather EvC was a place where people produced honest argumentation in favor of their positions and simply didn't take it so seriously when people had the temerity to disagree with them, rather than a place where people thought winning the argument was always more important than anything, including civility.
Holmes, in his past incarnation, was one of the chief figures guilty of the latter. Yeah, and I helped. I'm doing my best to change. Is Holmes? I don't yet get the sense that he has. If the past few days are any indication he's just going to keep doing what he's been doing, using dishonesty and misrepresentation to defend positions like everybody knows he does, like I've proven he does, even as they become more and more ridiculous, because he simply can't ever bear to admit when he's wrong.
Sorry if that's not something I feel like I can get behind. And how is a thread about Holmes's return not the appropriate topic to raise concerns about the return of Holmes? I think it's remarkably bad form to open a thread about someone just to trash them, and I'm ashamed of the times that I've felt compelled to do it in the past.
Plenty of people trash Faith every time it's suggested she be "allowed" to return. Holmes's conduct was just as bad, potentially even worse for how it usually went unnoticed. Look, he's got every opportunity to prove me wrong and I hope he does. A good start would be if he started taking on some of the creationists with some good science. I'd savor the chance to actually learn something from Holmes, like I used to, years ago. (So, actually, I guess when I said "never", I was lying. There actually was a time when I would look forward to what Holmes had to say.)

Re: Man, you really know how to kill the mood

If ever you leave for personal matters and decide to come back, perhaps people will feel the same of you since you have a tendency to alienate. Or maybe they'd have enough common courtesy to not drag you through the mud the first chance they get.
But honesty, NJ, we already have the POTM threads; is all of EvC to be a mutual admiration society for a select few individuals?
Because saying hello to someone after a hiatus is different than nominating them for a POTM.
Holmes, in his past incarnation, was one of the chief figures guilty of the latter.
Holmes and I are vastly different in many ways. We don't see eye to eye about most things. But we seem to be able to converse positively despite our differences. Hands down, the quality I liked most admired was his candor, which seems to be the one quality you think he lacks. Chiroptera is another affable fellow who happens also to be my polar opposite. I don't think we see one thing eye to eye. And that's fine. We seem to be able to discuss our different view points constructively.
Yeah, and I helped. I'm doing my best to change. Is Holmes?
I just really don't see the things you describe about Holmes. Sure, we're all fallible beings who can be tempted to do things we shouldn't do. I'm sure most of us could have handled things better in certain instances than we have. In my honest opinion, I think Holmes handles criticism better than most.
If the past few days are any indication he's just going to keep doing what he's been doing, using dishonesty and misrepresentation to defend positions like everybody knows he does, like I've proven he does, even as they become more and more ridiculous, because he simply can't ever bear to admit when he's wrong.
Give me an example so I can understand your frustration. Please understand, it seems you talk more poorly about him than me! That seems inconceivable given the fact you have less in common with me, with just as many, if not more, heated arguments.
And how is a thread about Holmes's return not the appropriate topic to raise concerns about the return of Holmes?
Alright, you make a good point here. It is perhaps an appropriate place, and you aren't violating any forum rules. Maybe for me its a question of good manners...? If you left and came back, and some people were rejoicing your return, I wouldn't trash you. I'd keep it to myself. I guess I would think of it as mean-spirited at the worst and tacky in the least.
Plenty of people trash Faith every time it's suggested she be "allowed" to return. Holmes's conduct was just as bad, potentially even worse for how it usually went unnoticed.
You and Holmes have been here about three years longer than I have, so it is possible that I have missed a lot of nasty dialogue over the years. But in the time that I've known the both of you, I haven't seen anything so egregious that you feel this upset over.
A good start would be if he started taking on some of the creationists with some good science. I'd savor the chance to actually learn something from Holmes, like I used to, years ago. (So, actually, I guess when I said "never", I was lying. There actually was a time when I would look forward to what Holmes had to say.)
What changed?
