Author | Topic: Will the human race split into two species? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

The article proposing this idea is located here.
BBC NEWS | UK | Human species 'may split in two' I want to discuss a few things concerning this article. 1. Will technology be a deterrent to the human race in the long run?Technology is great currently for the human race. Plumbing systems, health care, and communications have all helped societies considerably. However it might get to the point where all our needs can be solved by pressing a button. Our need for food, sex, and even emotional needs. 2. Will we lose emotions such as love, hate jealousy?Of course they are a deterrent to us now, and we would be much more civilized without emotion, however it seems as though we live for the good emotions. Without emotion we just live, like domestic animals. 3. Finally how can the human race split into two races? The way described in the article dosn't make much sense, and they don't back up their claims with any evidence, or patterns they see in evolution today. The claim they make is that over time people will get more and more pickier about their partners, however i don't see this happening enough to segrate into 2 species. quote:I agree completely. The proposed scenario is ludicrous. Curry may be an "evolutionary theorist", but he doesn't seem actually to know anything about biological evolution. Assortative mating (choosing a mate like yourself) is common, but is highly unlikely to lead to speciation. And the specific features he talks about make no sense. Bah. Where do they get these people?

Your instincts are correct: this is rubbish. And the man isn't an "evolutionary theorist", he's a social scientist. He works at the London School of Economics. His PhD was awarded by that institution's department of government. And his non-peer-reviewed idiocy was commissioned by a tv company.
The words "publicity-seeking tosser" come to mind.

The human race can't split into two. Everyone knows that the one world government has been sending out secret ninja squads to seek out and eliminate any individual who happens to carry a mutation that could potentially result in a new species emerging. That's why the Ledom had to go underground in the first place.

By the year 802,701 humans will have diverged into two distinct forms: the Eloi and the Morlocks.
Thus prophesied Saint Herbert-George. ____ Archer All species are transitional.

Well, humans have split into different races, but they can still interbreed.

Welcome to EvC, DemonScythe. I'm honored to be the recipient of your first post. May you never have cause to regret it!
I was noticing that little problem, too. Surely the OP means species. Using 'race' as a synonym is a terrible idea in an anthropological context. I believe the word choice originates in the article being quoted, though. You're right: taken literally the 'split' into races is already a done deal. And not a very big one, either, for all that some have made of it. Recent research suggests that even the last time real species split--modern humans and Neanderthals--interbreeding wasn't out of the question, either. (Congratulations, AdminNem, on your new 'Admin' status as well. The mustache suits you.) ___ Edited by Archer Opterix, : Aimless tinkering. Archer All species are transitional.

Right now, the races seem to be slowly merging. By the way, I enjoyed your post about the eloi and morlocks. That was the best response so far. Just say no to McCain 2008; he abandoned principle when he caved on habeus corpus

Well, I mean that, aren't races sort of 'micro' versions of species?

What I can imagine though is that maybe some kind of crisis occurs because of technology. I can see computers gaining artificial intelligence, which could cause some kind of war. With different groups in hiding, and the separation, it could cause different paths along the evolutional track. Heh, it's a pretty far out idea, but it's one of the only things i can think of which can cause a split into different species.

it's one of the only things i can think of which can cause a split into different species. In keeping with the science fiction tone of your post, once the asteroid 99942 Apophis hits earth in 2036 the human race might be wiped out entirely. If not, the resulting change in climate could produce a split in the species.

Well, if we ever colonize another planet it will almost certainly lead to speciation.
