Current site usage
I started keeping a site database on 12/29/03. Since then, the site has averaged 93 messages a day.
In general, the messages per day have been increasing, and the recent (7/21/03 through 7/31/03) numbers are:
148 messages per day average.
55 messages per day was the low single day rate.
208 messages per day was the high single day rate.
The all-time high single day message rate is 219 messages per day. That happened 12:37 pm 6/24/03 to 12:36 pm 6/25/03.
The all-time low single day message rate is 24 messages per day. That happened 11:05 am 3/1/03 to 3:30 pm 3/2/2003.
There has been 3 days of 200+ messages per day.
There has been 23 days of 150+ messages per day.
Generally, Saturday and Sunday are the slow days. The noonish Saturday to noonish Sunday rates range from about 40 to 120 messages per day.
Now lets not just post a bunch of garbage messages, just to set a new record.
Cheers,
Adminnemooseus

Message posting quantity through the roof
From 11:36am 8/6/03 thru 12:33pm 8/8/03, we have has 15 new topics and 496 new messages. This is approximately an average of 10 new messages per hour, every hour.
Now, I know I'm learning impaired, with a memory length of about... (now what was I talking about?) - But might not the quantity (some of dubious quality?) be swamping out the overall quality?
Adminnemooseus
Added by edit: From 7/21/03 through 8/8/03 we have been averaging 151 messages per day.

EvC Forum Traffic Increases, Site a Success
Hello, everyone!
I'm having a bit of a busy fall and holiday season, but I just took a moment to check our site statistics, something I haven't done in a long while. It turns out that site traffic has been steadily increasing since the beginning of this past summer:
December is low, of course, because we're only 1/3 through the month. If we pass 30GB in a single month it will be a remarkable achievement. 30GB is our monthly limit on the current server, a limit I thought we'd never touch, yet here we are 3/4 of the way there. And more good news: at 41% of capacity, we still have disk space to spare and won't have to prune old threads for perhaps another year.
Thanks go to everyone here for our success, and Happy Holidays!
--Percy
PS - I should explain that the reason the statistics start in May is because our webhosting company changed to a new statistics reporting tool in May. Statistics from before May are available, but in a completely different format.

Bytes coming and going?
I presume that that total is both incoming and outgoing volume. Is that correct.
It would be interesting to see the split.

Re: EvC Forum Traffic Increases, Site a Success
When compared to earlier statistics, is the current increase continuous all the way back to launch, or is it episodic? Also, a little sociology problem: does it seem to anyone that the number of active users is at near-equilibrium, with the increase in traffic due to lurkers, or is there an increase in active users proportional to increased traffic? Which population is increasing more, Creationists or evolutionists? (It seems to me the evos are increasing, with yecs in decline, and that this is a fairly constant trend).

To answer the questions:
I don't know whether the numbers include both incoming and outgoing. Certainly it includes outgoing. Whatever the case, incoming is probably a tiny proportion of outgoing.
NosyNed, I have a little free time tomorrow. If you're still interested in helping out with coding let me know via a post to this thread and I'll make the source code available to you tomorrow.
This is the monthly data I have from 2002 on. I have little data for May, 2002, because that was the month we switched webhosting companies. And the data for February, 2003, is low because most data for that month was lost after a server crash. Units are GB:
How the increased traffic is balanced between participation and lurking is impossible to say without correlating with message statistics. Moose has the message statistics, perhaps he could give combining them a shot.
The site appears to have more evolutionists than Creationists at present. Whether this is a trend or a fluctuation is hard to say.

Helping out
Of course, I am still interested. You do pick a bad time of the year though, don't you? So I may be more Ho Hoing than coding. (outrageous that an atheist gets to Ho Ho isn't it? -- even gets presents )

I have some various graphs of numbers of topics, numbers of messages, and numbers of registered member. Unfortunately, my older computer with my FTP software has developed some sort of modem problem, and I can't upload the graphs or the updated all-topic database.
The database is current through 12/8/03, end of day. For quite a stretch I was doing it noon to noon, or thereabouts. Currently, I'm doing it midnight to midnight (times are evcforum time).
Anyhow, the graph of message totals breaks down into 3 fairly distinct time periods.
From 12/29/02 through 4/21/03, the forum averaged 82 messages/day.
From 4/21 through 7/20/03, the forum averaged 100 messages/day.
From 7/20 through 12/8/03, the forum averaged 178 messages/day.
Overall, 12/29/02 through 12/8/03, the forum averaged 126 messages/day.
The all time low message day was 3/2/03 - 27 messages in 1.14 days, or 24 messages / 24 hours (I never could figure out why that day was so dead - I don't think there were any site problems).
The all time high message day was 11/18/03 - 334 messages in 1.00 days (of course, also 334 messages / 24 hours).
4/24/03 was the first day to have 200+ messages / 24 hours (as in normalized to a 24 hour period).
8/7/03 was the first day to have 250+ messages / 24 hours.
8/19/03 was the first day to have 300+ messages / 24 hours.
There has been 19 days with 250+ messages / 24 hours.
There has been 7 days with 300 messages / 24 hours.
Since 10/26/03, there has been only 3 days with under 125 messages / 24 hours.
I have notes of 3 examples of extreme rates in 3 different individual topics.
77 messages in 4 hours, 20 minutes (The famous Wise "Evolution of Light" topic).
52 messages in 4 hours (DC85's "The Evolution of Flight. Why are some birds grounded).
56 messages in 8 hours (keith63's "Does prophecy support the Bible").
Cheers,
Adminnemooseus

Moose, (or Percy)
At the time of this post, we have 1468 registered members. Is there anyway to differentiate between those who have posted at least once and lurkers? I'd be very interested in how many members are active members.
(if there is any way I could be of assistance in compiling any info for the site, or helping out in any way other than moderation, I have a month off starting at the end of next week.)

Babble detection meter destroyed by overload
I've just completed compiling the database thru 12/16/03 end of day.
quote:
The all time high message day was 11/18/03 - 334 messages in 1.00 days (of course, also 334 messages / 24 hours).
Monday, 12/15/03 - 333 messages / 24 hours.
Tuesday, 12/16/03 - 390 messages / 24 hours.
I DO NOT see this situation as being a good thing.

Slow stretch
Towards the end of 12/18/03, there were no messages posted between 10:10 pm and 11:51 pm. And that 11:51 message was a test by me, to see if things were working.
Strange.
