Good point. Which is why it won't be allowed....from either "side" or from anyone. As Admins, we will even be handing out 1 day suspensions to each other, if the situation warrents it.
We can trace the dialogue and see who said what to whom about whatever.
If it appears as a prolonged spat between two or more posters, we can simply give everyone a one day suspension.
That is one purpose that an administrator serves----they administer proper discipline within the confines of forum communications.
Can anyone seriously expect to address the problem any other way?

Re: Friction sans fire
Granted,Buz, there are eager posters from both sides of the fence who are out of their depth, but forum rules mean we have to give them a chance.
Re the Bible, what makes you think many of us are tyros at either Biblical theory or history? Do you assume because we point out flaws that we do it from a position of ignorance? Or is it remotely possible that many might have had a gutful of the the lies, the cover-ups, the lack of morality, the failed prayers, the abysmal, continuing, ignorance of the majority of Christians, the exploitation of hierachies, the soliciting of religious celebrities, the oppression of minorities, the sexual agendas, etc., etc., etc.

Re: is this a one-way street?
Well, Randy, if the shoe fits. If it doesn`t then you have no complaint. Civility is a two-way street or haven`t you noticed. Your endless rants against evos, evolution, Haeckel, etcetera, etcetera, hardly are conducive to being held in high regard. As a master of vile accusations instead of reasoned argument you might just qualify for having almost no self-awareness.

Re: is this a one-way street?
Sorry, Pb, for putting you on the spot in the season of goodwill, but a long season of reading guff takes its toll. EvC used to have threads of outstanding arguments and technical expertise, but some of the current crop have reduced it to nonsense. Wild statements get tossed around and despite repeated calls, no evidence gets produced to back them up. So we ramble on and on till the 300 post limit, start a folow-up thread, and ramble some more. Individuals here give their valuable knowledge freely, but they get drowned in a sea of mud. I know we lean over backwards to lure more of the creationist side, but rarely does the quality improve. I don`t know what the answer is, but giving mediocrity free range, ain`t the way to go.

The good old days
What do you think made the old science discussions better? And how long ago are you talking about? Was EvC attracting more science-minded creationists who could hold up their end of the debate better, or is there some other reason? I haven't understood why with all the complaining about the deterioration of science here you don't just enforce strict science standards for certain threads and leave others free for the rest of us, instead of trying to get blood out of a turnip, meaning those who can't or don't want to get onto that level of science. In any case, your vilification of people for not toeing some line of your own definition is pretty mean stuff.

Thus sayeth randman. Yet, in the same post he writes:
There is a massive, continual level of vitriol, insults, and false accusations, at times bordering on paranoia as shown in the comment above, hurled by evos at anyone that dares to criticize their beliefs. The vilest accusations are thrown out with no substantiation and seemingly almost no self-awareness within the evo community here.
Does randman even see the hypocrisy here?

How very tingly.

Absolutely not--I think short (but escalating) suspensions are the only way to go. The effective force here is the participants' addiction.

Three strikes
I think we should adopt a 'three strikes and you're' out policy. Many other sites employ this strategy, and it would save a lot of admin time as it appears that some people do not know how to conduct a civil discussion. Any members that admins have had to ban ten, eleven, twleve times, surely do not belong on a discussion board.
Think how much time it would save.
Brian.

Re: is this a one-way street?
Nighttrain,
As someone who has been a lurker, but not a poster, for many months let me tell you that this board serves a great purpose.
I am a computer engineer by degree and work as a pre-sales engineer by trade. I have learned SO MUCH about evolution from reading this board.... you can't imagine it. In fact, although I think I have a good science background (engineers have to take A LOT of physics), I sometimes wondered, "how do we REALLY know that evolution happened this way" ,etc. Reading the patient and extremely thoughtful replies to some of the more vitriolic members here has been an extremely valuable experience for me. I can't tell you how many times I have used the information I've leanred here in discussions with my friends in the "real world". I have actually convinced some of my friends who were very uncertain about evolution as to how well supported of a theory it was using just information I learned here at this board!
Also, I think this board is a great resource for young people who may have been lied to or mislead by their parents, pastor, etc. Just think, if you have convinced even ONE young person to take a closer look at reality and question their beliefs you have done a great service to society.
I can see (from being a lurker) how frustrated you guys get sometimes, but keep up the GREAT work. You are really teaching some of us non-biologists (yes, even evil engineers like me!) some really interesting things and doing a really nice job of it!
Happy holidays

the sexual abuse, the name-calling from parents, the beatings from sunday school teachers, the 'reformation parties' to keep kids from trick-or-treating, the bullshit in christian school science classes, girls planning to become obgyn's specifically to become pro-life acticists and deny good healthcare, the guised hate, the sexual segregation, the lies about sex, the lies about friendship, the lies about love, the lies about relationships, the fairy tales about marriage...

I see absolutely nothing wrong with pointing out a very simple truth.

Come on now, we know the Creationists get preferential treatment because there are so few of them willing to stick around for more than a few days.
I've not seen the evos get any worse than the creationists, it's just there are so many more evos on this site that they make a bigger stink (no jokes please ) by shear number.
Additionally, I understand the need to be respectful to others, but sometimes it's important to point out the absolute stupidity of some people's actions and opinions. Would I do this in real life? Hell yes I would.

Re: is this a one-way street?
The problem jar is it is a delusion on you guy's part that the reason people don't agree with you is that they are unreasonable. In other words, it is a lie.
But you make my point about a total lack of self-awareness nicely.

I have. Maybe you are too biased to know.
Additionally, I understand the need to be respectful to others, but sometimes it's important to point out the absolute stupidity of some people's actions and opinions.
Like believing and teaching a hoax for 125 years, and then when exposed, some evos still try to defend it ad nauseum. I agree, which is why I bring up Haeckel...a lot.
