At office, mozilla 1.7 (on solaris 10)
At home, I think it is mozilla 1.4 (and it is on solaris 8)

Calling Jar... Calling Jar...
Solaris? Even at home?
Well, you're not alone. I believe Jar uses Solaris. He's used the chat room a bit, perhaps he can comment.

Re: Calling Jar... Calling Jar...
It might be a timing problem.
My habit has been to click on the clock face as soon as that appears, so that chat lines are time-stamped. Today I tried waiting till the cursor shows up on the send line, before I click on the clock. So far that has been fine.

Chat Barfs with Opera but works with all the others (except Netscape 8 which I have not yet tried).
In Opera the fact that you're logged in does not get passed to the java script.

You guys are over my head! I always just use one browser. Am I hopelessly computer illiterate?
It works for me. I can chat on one window and check the board on another window.

Of course not! As long as you keep trying new things so that 80% of the time you don't know what you're doing, then you're on the vanguard with the rest of us!
If much of the time you find you only know what you're doing in retrospect, then you're doing fine!

AOL and Chat & Who's Chatting Now
AOL and Chat
I have the latest word on using EvC Forum chat with AOL: don't!
It won't work.
Instead use Internet Explorer.
Who's Chatting Now
Some have noticed that the "Chatting Now" line in the summary box that appears at the top of each page has been empty since sometime yesterday. The problem has been traced to a server at SigmaChat. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Who's Chatting Now Problem Diagnosed
The problem lies at the chat room end. Here are some excerpts from email I received from the support team at SigmaChat:
SigmaChat Support writes:
After checking our server logs, it appears that our servers have been receiving an abnormally large amount of requests for your account's Who's Chatting List. As such, our servers are designed to automatically protect themselves by refusing requests for this account per our ToS.
This is done to prevent server crashes; to ensure reliable service and uptime for your users, and our other clients; and to ensure that the Who's Chatting system does not impede the performance of your own web site.
...
Generally, this issue arises for one of the following two reasons:
...
2. (Most common) You are using the embedded option for the SigmaChat Who's Online module, and you run a popular website.
Popular? Us? Gee, thanks!
Looking at the site statistics for EvC Forum, it would appear that we request Who's Chatting Now information about 20,000 times a day. This doesn't seem excessive to me, but I can install some software that archives the result of the Who's Chatting Now query and doesn't make the request any more frequently than once per minute, which would be a maximum of 1440 times per day.
I'll do this at my next available opportunity, possibly this weekend. It'll take longer after the fix for the Chatting Now list to begin working again as I have to notify SigmaChat, and they have to manually turn it back on again.

Notification of Chat Changes
I just received this email from RaiderSoft, which provides the software and servers for our chatroom. The email's intended audience is webmasters, but I include it here anyway as I don't have time to digest it and boil it down to member-relevant information right now. A discussion about what impact this might have on us, if any, would be welcome.

Dear SigmaChat Customer,
On November 2nd, 2006 RaiderSoft will be launching the latest update (version 8.0) to SigmaChat. As with all updates, no action will be required on your part; our service updates are completely automated and free of charge. Included in this eMail are important details concerning this upgrade and your SigmaChat account.
Company Name Change & Product Name Change
-----------------------------------------
Effective on the release date, RaiderSoft and SigmaChat will get new names! We will be announcing the new company and product name on the day of the final release along with very exciting changes and enhancements to our support and sales systems.
Service Plan Changes & Modules
------------------------------
Effective with version 8.0, we will be renaming our service plans:
Current Service Plan Name New Edition Name
------------------------- --------------------------------------
Basic Free
Professional Professional
Platinum Professional PLUS
Enterprise Professional PLUS (with added modules)
Starting with version 8.0, we will also be introducing various modules (described below). As the features included in our new service editions will change; current Professional, Platinum, and Enterprise customers will find that some features that were previously included in their account will now be listed as modules in their account.
You will continue to have all of the features that you have previously paid for, in addition to new features added with version 8.0.
A new Enterprise service edition will become available after the launch date. The new Enterprise service will offer features including moderation, avatars, and firewall friendly connections.
We will also be making minor changes to our pricing structure. These prices will be published on our web site when version 8.0 is released.
Preparing For the New Release
-----------------------------
Version 8.0 will require Sun's Java technology to work properly. While most of your users are likely already using this version of Java, we strongly recommend that you encourage your users to ensure that they're using the latest version by visiting http://www.java.com/
New Features
------------
* Redesigned Chat Client making use of the latest Java technology
* Enhanced Instant (Private) Messaging
* Brand new, easy to use web based control panel
* Additional Languages
* Faster display, consuming less CPU resources
* Large & Extra Large Icon Sets
* Enhanced User Ignore System
* Full Support for Unicode
* Enhanced Room (Subroom) System

* Away Status Feature
* Ignore Private Messages Option
* Enhanced Shout Filter
* Usergroups to make it easier to organize your user accounts
* Enhanced Remote Authentication System
* Customizable Content Formats allow you full control over how messages are displayed in your chat room
* Optional Idle Timeout

* Enhanced User Self-Registration System
* Enhanced Who's Chatting System
* User-is-Typing indicator
* Applet Background Image
* Word Replacement Feature
* Support for Moderated Events & Guest Speakers

* Many features now available as modules which may be purchased individually
* ... and much more!
Not all features may be included in your service edition. After the final release, our web site will provide a detailed description of all features, and the editions to which they're available.
Anticipated Downtime
--------------------
We anticipate between four to six hours of downtime in the very early morning hours of our launch date. This downtime is required while we transfer all existing accounts over to our new network. After the update is complete, we will send out a final release notification via eMail to all customers.
Should you or any of your users experience any problems following the update, please try the following:
1. Empty your browser's cache, then shutdown all open browsers before testing the update.
2. Ensure that you have the latest version of Java by visiting http://www.java.com/
3. Log in to the new account control panel from Forbidden to view new settings, and verify
that all of the settings are to your liking.
If you are still experiencing problems after trying the above, please contact us at support@raidersoft.com.
Information for Current Beta Testers
------------------------------------
Current Beta testers will lose their v8.0-Beta settings during the final update. The chat room link code (including Who's Chatting system, and user registration links) used in Beta testing will no longer be available after the final release of version 8.0. To ensure a smooth transition, please revert back to your old (v7.4) link code shortly before the final update.
Please do not reply to this eMail. For questions, please contact us via eMail at support@raidersoft.com. You have received this eMail because your eMail address was used to register for a RaiderSoft hosted web application. If you would like your eMail address removed from our company mailing list, please visit Forbidden

About The New Chatroom
Its here, and we have been experimenting with it this morning.
If anyone has trouble getting in, clear all of your old cookies and try again....it took me ten-fifteen seconds for it to load

Re: About The New Chatroom
Yo Big P! Chat isn't loading at all for me... error after error. It loads a black screen, and there's a new load bar! It's just frustrating. I've been trying for nearly 8 hours to get in now!
I'm downloading that update to see if it helps, but I really wish the chat would be more dialup friendly.

Re: About The New Chatroom
8 hours? and all this time you could have been at work teaching old people how to answer the phone!
well...keep trying, Jon....there are a few cool features in the new chatroom.
Same emoticons, though. Except angricon, your favorite...now has :{ instead of :<
