Emoticons and smilies have zero literary value. They usualy appear as pimples on the face of an already blemished writing.
Now there's something we can agree on! I especially liked your Shakespeare example.
The use of emoticons should be discouraged as much as possible, in favour of the teaching of good writing. Words should speak for themselves.

I say yes to emoticons
And I say yes to sarcasm, irony, pastiche, proverbs, literary allusions and many more of those beautiful constructs you can make with words alone. If I want pictures, I'll read a comic, thank you very much.
I think you two are getting old.
O dear, you're a rookie, aren't you?
Metaphors be with you.

Re: Emoticons
Some of them wouldn't recognize sarcasm, etc. if it sat down beside them in church.
The emoticons are for them.
They're welcome to them. If my sarcasm amounts to pearls before swine, then they have a problem, not I. I just enjoy writing it.

Same here (molbiogirl, please read this.)
I had the same problems accessing the site. I even became so desperate that I started searching cached Google pages to see what was going on at EvC.
By the way, molbiogirl, if you google pictures of a Dutch writer named Connie Palmen, you should be surprised at the likeness of this author to Laurie Anderson. There's even a photograph of Connie in almost the same striped jacket as Laurie in your avatar. Funny!
