Re: Maintaining avatar
I think you are looking for the preservation of old avatars. This would require using server storage space to store the old avatars. I don't see that it's worth it.
On a vaguely related note: Signatures.
Currently the old signatures persist - They are part of the page HTML files. I like the preservation of the old signatures.
I also like the current system, where one has to specifically turn on your signature. I prefer not to have it show automaticly. And I find those members who have long signatures to be annoying when they always post the signature.
I only post my admin mode signature when I think the info (links) are relivent to my message. I only post my non-admin mode signature occassionally, as it is rather lengthy.
Cheers,

The "This message is a reply to:" notation
Minor detail, but I think it would be nice if the "This message is a reply to:" notation were displayed at the topic of the reply message, rather than at the bottom.
I know I often find myself scrolling to the bottom of a long message, to find out who it is a reply to, and then scrolling back up to either the replied to message or the top of the reply.

A "Search for messages by author" button?
Instead of having to go to the "Search" page, and entering the member name in "Search by User Name", might it be nice if a button at the bottom of the individual messages resulted in the same search? Perhaps located to the right of "Profile"?

Long topic titles causing wide page widths
The current more extreme example that stands out to me is:
http://EvC Forum: Soracilla defends the Flood? (mostly a "Joggins Polystrate Fossils" discussion) -->EvC Forum: Soracilla defends the Flood? (mostly a "Joggins Polystrate Fossils" discussion)
See the line right above the "New Topic" and "Gen Reply" buttons, at the top of the page.
Note how the topic title goes way off the field of view on the right side (at least for me on my 800x600 display).
Fortunately it does not effect to width of the message text fields, but I thought it might be something that could be tweeked.

Re: Long topic titles causing wide page widths
Using Firefox.
I had noticed it before, but thought I'd bring it up this time. I saw that scroll bar at the bottom of the page, and I was starting to look for an overlong URL - Then I realized it wasn't a URL problem.
I guess I'm just conditioned to not liking horizontal scroll bars. Maybe there's a fix somewhere in the Firefox setup.
As software problems go, this one is on the cutting edge of "pretty damn small.

Re: Long topic titles causing wide page widths
But the big problem is folk that give us these long topic titles.

Signatures
I vaguely recall (as in, I'm probably wrong) that you (Percy) had plans to set up the signatures such that when the signature changes, it also changes on all the old messages, like the avatars do. I personally would not like that system - I would like the old signatures preserved as they were when the message was originally posted.
