Limbo forum
Why don't we use the "Limbo" forum for problem posters any more? Especially since it seems such a fitting consignment for those who continually flout good taste.

Re: AdminBuzsaw giving false advice
AdminBuzsaw makes a typically erroneous suggestion that calling an idea stupid is the same as calling a person stupid. This seems to be a common error.

The goal is to address the content of posts and if an idea is stupid it should be shown to be stupid. The key point is "shown to be stupid".

I'm a little confused as to what you are saying is false if you agree that he handled it well. What exactly are getting at?

Re: Question about Offensive Content
have you ever seen goatse on Slashdot?

Unfortunately, I've seen Goatse. *shudders* Never seen this "Slashdot," and if its anything like Goatse, I never want to. Whatever you do, DON'T post the image. I'm sure the name is sufficient enough for any curious members to track down themselves.

In an old forum that I belonged to, people thought it was hilarious to act as if they were linking you to something that would corroborate their oh-so brilliant post. When you opened the link, there was Goatse, in all its horror.

Then I found EvC and didn't have to deal with nearly as much childish antics. :)

Re: Question about Offensive Content
Really? You see, Admin's post agree's with Vacate--that image should be hidden if on this site.

You're arguing that it should be left visible.

I was arguing that Percy should have the last word, since I understood him to essentially be saying, "your dilemma at work doesn't constitute an emergency on my part."

I have gone and changed it. Thanks for clarifying.

Is that what you think a democracy is? It isn't. EvC is not a democracy if this is how it's actually run.

Yes, in a Democracy we vote for elected officials, but we are not the elected officials, and we don't pass or enforce laws-- they do. So, yes, I think this site is run like a Democracy.

Re: The Nature of an Admin
Strictly speaking calling someone a fool in itself is not an ad hominem fallacy .
Your attack on Jar's debating style was - it was an attack on the person rather than the actual point (and in this case Jar was and is entirely correct - to call a document "revisionist" is not the same as saying that it has been revised).

Why would criticising an evasive debate style be ad hominem, but being called a "fool" wouldn't?

To add: The argument about revisionist vs revised is not a part of the current discussion. Tha'ts just one example out of a myriad. The issue is this particular member always claims that something is off topic, which is evasive and typical of derailing the conversation so as not to answer the question.

But don't worry about it now since I've taken care of the problem by simply ignoring the poster from here on out. I'm having this conversation with Jon, not Jar. Thanks for your input though.

Re: The Nature of an Admin
Because in the first case the criticism was being used INSTEAD of argument (it did not apply to the point in question) and in the other it was simply a comment.

I think you need to reacquaint yourself with the definition of ad hominem. That's an awful lot of wrangling in order to justify your assertion.

I don't doubt that it is but one example of your many, many errors of fact. However it happens to be relevant because it was the point you chose to defend by attacking Jar's debating style.

Its not really so much of a debate style as it is an avoidance problem. Jar doesn't get to run the tempo of the board by expecting everyone to jump through his hoops. I find it humorous that you say that I'm "attacking" Jar, but you say nothing about his slander, or Jon's for that matter-- something that it unambiguously ad hom. At least be consistent so as not to appear totally biased by scolding all parties involved.

But let me reiterate:

It no longer matters because I've taken care of the problem by simply ignoring the poster. Since I've already stated that I regret making that comment on that thread, I don't know what else there is to discuss.

So as far as I'm concerned, you can have what you covet-- the last word.

Re: Permanent Suspension = Ban
IP ban involves a lot more people than just the person in question.

Perhaps. But unless you ban the IP, the person can just endlessly change names, i.e Vashgun, HEWG, Ihategod, etc.

I was banned by a well known Christian website's chatroom for asking if they had a forum to challenge the fairness of a moderator's decision. They said no and then proceeded to make some terrible comment about members of the board. I can't remember what she called them verbatim, but it was something like "peasants," or something extremely derogatory and uncalled for, especially for an avowed Christian. I responded, "Don't you think that's a little fascist?"

Then they banned me.

Literally, that's all I said.

Point is, they banned my IP address, because I wanted to see if I could get back in using another name. Very effective.
