My observations would confirm that size is important.
Small birds, like sparrows, almost always hop. Large birds almost always walk. Those in between (blackbirds, crows) may use either or both. Starlings are the smallest bird I know of that use walking almost exclusively. I don't entirely believe your explanation, however. The birds that use both modes do not seem to pay that much attention to the roughness of the terrain. They'll use both modes over quite flat terrain. Crows seem to use hopping for speed - instead of running (although they more often walk than hop). Blackbirds on the other hand do run and rarely, if ever, walk (although they mostly hop). I'd agree that the energy cost of hopping increases more quickly with mass. I can see another difference, too - in predator avoidance strategies. Running is better for getting under cover (blackbirds run, crouched down, when threatened - or they fly). Hopping is easier to turn into a takeoff.

The slowing-down effect is a consequence of changing light speed, as explained in the paper (in section 2.2 entitled "The Slowing Down Effect").

Nudging and winking in that sense are probably quite old. Saying - or writing - the words instead of performing the actions may be quite old, too. It might have been done in a cartoon or a music hall performance. So I don’t have any difficulty in imagining that it predated Python. But I have no idea when it started.

Liquid Retina is LCD technology. Apple only have it on the (less expensive) iPhone XR - the others iPhone X versions are all OLED. OLED displays are easier to find- most high-end Smartphones and even the mid-range use OLED displays. If OLED works for you it shouldn’t be too hard to find an Android phone which suits.

Probably - but the Liquid Retina screen is just a very good LCD. I doubt that a good OLED screen is worse though, or Apple wouldn’t use them.

There probably is a User Guide in the Books app.

Books is part of the standard installation. It’s where you would find books - from Apple. it’s also Apples alternative to the Kindle app.

Even if the User Guide isn’t already present it should be available for download at no charge.
iOS 13 is still in beta - 12.4 is the current version.

The UK stuck with miles all along. We never changed to kilometres.
I have seen cars with dual rings speedometers, presumably so that they can be sold in the UK and in Europe. Ireland has gone to kilometres, so I suspect that’s the place to find dual ring speedometers - because I expect Northern Ireland is using miles like the rest of the UK.

I think I have to disagree with a lot of this.
Cups were used in older recipes. The rest may be regional differences. Pounds and ounces are usually only seen in market stalls, and even there they are going away (it’s becoming more common to have fixed price bowls of fruit and some veg, too). In supermarkets meat and vegetables are exclusively metric. I haven’t even seen the equivalent cost for a pound on the pricing labels in the last few years.
