Missing message still in my topic index
This is interesting. A little while ago I posted a message in the thread "Organized Religion & personal Spirituality". Topic Index for Chiroptera indicates that I did write message #76. However, when I check that thread, my message is no where to be found, and message #76 was written by [Dan's clever alias]. Phatboy responded to that message, and, sure enough, Topic Index for Chiroptera indicates that replies for #76 await. Even though I didn't write #76. Even though I actually did write #76. Or something.
No big deal, but those responsible for bugs and maintenance may find this interesting.

Re: Missing message still in my topic index
Yes, that is correct: I did write message #74. However, a little later (I did not note the time; Topic Index for Chiropter reports it as 12:19 pm) I responded to message #75 by Phatboy. I used the usual "reply to this specific message" button.
{Added by Adminnemooseus - I also see the 12:19 pm at the index. At the topic page itself, I see 2:14 pm as the posting time of message 76. I've checked, and both Chiroptera and I are using eastern U.S. time zone values, so there shouldn't be any time value conflicts between what we each see.
Message 76, at 12:19 pm, overwritten by message 76, at 2:14 pm?}

Re: EvC Forum Finally Switches to Daylight Savings Time
I just switched to GMT. I am currently on Central Daylight Time, which is 5 hours behind GMT, even though my clock says 2:25, the board is claiming 8:25 (a 6 hour difference). Perhaps the board thinks that GMT goes on daylight savings time, too?

Re: EvC Forum Finally Switches to Daylight Savings Time
I'm pretty sure that GMT is a colloquial expression for Universal Coordinated Time, which does not do "summer time/daylight savings time". I may be wrong, but if so we can just call it UTC (Universal Coordinated Time or is that Coordinated Universal Time?) instead of GMT. At any rate, I would suggest that since there is an international membership to this forum, maybe UTC should be the default setting (although I vote for calling it GMT).
I just fixed this problem for myself: I just set my personal setting to 1 hour before what the board thinks is GMT. This just makes it another clock to reset when we go on/off DST.
Anyway, sorry for suggesting that you add yet another thing to your to-do list.

recorded time of edits
I am writing this post.
I will now log off...
...and immediately edit the post...
This message has been edited by Chiroptera, 08-Oct-2005 09:20 PM
...and log off again.
While I am logged off, the time in which I posted this message is reported as 5:19 pm, which is Eastern Time, which is the default mode of this board.
But while I am logged off, the time reported for the edit is recorded as 9:20 pm, which is GMT, which is what I have set in my preferences when I am logged in.
In other words, when I am logged off, the board reports the time of posting in the default setting, but the time for the edit in the preference that I have set, even when the two are not the same.
Is this just me, or does anyone else notice this?

Once that text is created....
Ah! *Thumps forehead* Of course! That blurb is included as text in the post!
Then perhaps nwr's suggestion is a good one: perhaps the time zone (like "-1 GMT", which is what I have currently set) could be added to the time, like it is in my email headings.
It's no big deal, of course. It's just that it defeats the purpose of putting a time stamp on the edit, since no one really has a good way of knowing which time zone the editor has set in her preferences.

Re: The use of board code in topic titles
The italics are not being displayed in the title for me, either.
Edited to add:
I'm using Firefox on Linux.

Also note at that topic: The topic title is not breaking to continue on a second line. Instead it goes off-screen to the right, and requires scrolling to read.
This isn't a problem for me; both thread title and message subtitles are properly wrapping onto a second line.
What I do notice (and I think this might be Faith's problem as well) is when I have my time zone set to
Display times in the time zone of your local computer
no times or dates whatsoever are displayed.

Oh, that title. I keep my browser window wide enough that it didn't need a second line -- when I narrow my window, it doesn't wrap for me, either.

Re: Missing Link? Chiropteras post 56

It worked this time ??
That's because I rewrote the post and resubmitted it.
I don't know what happened the first time. The first time I hit a keyboard command (by mistake) that seemed to have the same effect as hitting the preview button. Then when I submitted it for real, my browser seemed to have hung up. I finally hit "stop", and then when I went to check "All Topics" (to see if it was submitted), I found the same problem as you.
I then cleared cookies, cache, history, and everything (in case that was the problem), but it wasn't. Having cleared my history, I had to retype the message again and resubmit it, and it worked.
A bug? Or just some random, unexplained hic-up due to supernatural forces?
Added by edit:
Ha ha ha. "Missing link." Now I get it.
Edited by Chiroptera, : No reason given.

Login/Logout
I've recently notice something. When I first come to EvC, I have a logout button instead of the login button, even though I have not yet logged in. If I press the logout button, it claims to have logged me out, and I get the usual login button again, and the login button remains everytime I return to EvC until I finally exit Firefox.
Then, after exiting Firefox and running Firefox again, I get the logout button again. Since I have my browser set to delete cookies when I exit, I suspect that this is a cookie problem.
No big deal; just one extra mouse click if I want to login without responding to a message. But this may be of interest to someone.
