I'm opening a thread to do bug reporting. As a former software tester and software designer, ... yeah, gotta have it.
Now, I'm not trying to hack the board at all (i.e. doing real testing), just making a place to report bugs when I see them.

Currently not disallowing the HTMOL "body" tag
As mentioned somewhere else, you should disallow the HTML "BODY" tag, if you want to stop people from re-coloring the background color of this page.

HTML "Bookmark" refs don't work
The following code doesn't work:
go to bookmark in my post
the link produced by the orignial statement is a bookmark at http:// (i.e. a url pointing to http:///#bookmark)
Demo:
see paragraph about Tannenbaum (click me!!)
boo boo
Tannenbaum

Not disallowing HTML "Base" tag
the "base" HTML tag sets the base URL for all relative URLs on a webpage. If you have any relative URLs in your HTML generation, then allowing the "base" HTML tag in a post would break those links (and possibly expose users to spoofing?)
Thanks!

Bug in 'most recent posts' function
When I click on my name to view my 'most recent posts', I have this thread in my list:
http://EvC Forum: Male studies -->EvC Forum: Male studies
but not this one:
http://EvC Forum: How, and where, does gene expression work? -->EvC Forum: How, and where, does gene expression work?
Both of these are errors. I'm not sure if there's more missing or added.

Re: Bug in 'most recent posts' function
Ah, shoot. I guess it's been a while since I was working in software...
I destroyed the "repro" by posting to the missing topic. I guess it regenerated the list.
Stupid.
But the other thread that is NOT mine still appears in my list (Male studies (PerfectDeath)).

Search Function Results
I can't get "search" to return this thread in any circumstance:
http://EvC Forum: Natural heuristic solutions: evidence against Creationism? -->EvC Forum: Natural heuristic solutions: evidence against Creationism? (Natural Heuristic Solutions: Evidence Against Creationism?)
I tried all of these different searches:
  • Search "Heuristic" in SUBJECT: no author
  • Search "Heuristic" in SUBJECT: bencip19 author
  • Search "" in SUBJECT: bencip19 author

(and some others that are basically the same)

Drop-down menus and search webpage
One of the strangest behavior's I've seen. Not really too important, but, best to report all that I see.
At http://http://www.evcforum.net/cgi-bin/search_new.cgi
If you use the menus such as "Side Order" or "Bits & Bytes" on this page, the menus hide BEHIND the combo boxes "Search Forum/Archive" and "Search By". Totally weird behavior. They show in front of all other fields.

Inline event-based scripting
Well...
Happened to be going through old threads, trying to reply to posts I may have missed. Got around to the thread that led to me reporting these problems... here's a little notification of something I thought of:
This block changes the background color to red:
Check the source for this block. When you allow HTML, you allow inline, event-based scripting. There are a lot of objects with a lot of events.
I can use the inline scripting to manipulate any HTML objects (hidden or visible, for content or appearance) to my liking. Just food for thought.
This block removes your banner image, and replaces it with my own.
P.S. If you don't laugh after seeing this, ... lol. I couldn't even imagine.
P.P.S. Feel free to edit this post to turn off these scripts.
Ben

Re: Inline event-based scripting
It's possible you can just filter all attributes on tags that start with "on." That should be pretty easy to filter.
I'll take a look at the "unread messages" indicator as I continue to try and catch up on some threads. The logic is pretty straightforward, so I should be able to pay attention without much trouble.

HTML errors
Here are some basic HTML errors that I've found recently:
General:
  • when viewing a thread with IE, before the table loads, the screen shows a photo with a link at the bottom. The link says "Registe". That's a mis-spelling. This page usually disappears immediately (but today, it didn't, due to some internet problem)
http:///WebPages/AboutThisSite.html
  • Links to "Percipient" and "TrueCreation" are pre-dBoard.
http:///WebPages/SiteMap.html
  • Pretty much every link to the dynamic board area is pre-dBoard
http:///WebPages/GettingStarted.html
  • All links are old-school. Especially the link to the smilies.
http:///WebPages/ForumRules.html
  • You know what I'm going to say here...
I'm too lazy to check any more... I checked most but not all.

Alias of "started thread" user
If you change your alias, all your posts seem to change to the new alias. Good.
But today I was looking at my list of most recent posts. And I noticed that old threads that I started were shown as originating with my old aliases (Ben!, bencip19).
Given the purpose of allowing multiple aliases (to allow somebody to change their ID, because they didn't like the original) this seems to be a bug in the feature that should be fixed.

Re-escaping in "preview"
Every time I hit "preview," the URL inside of my "A" tag is being re-escaped.
http://EvC Forum: Abusive Assumptions -->EvC Forum: Abusive Assumptions
gets turned into
EvC Forum: Abusive Assumptions
click again,
http://EvC Forum: Information -->EvC Forum: Information
click again,
shortened
So every time I re-edit my message and click "preview" again, this happens.
Now, looks like your URL decoding handles this for your own website, but I doubt other websites handle it. I don't know a good URL to check offhand...

Weird thing today.
I access this website via http://EvC Forum: All Topics using FireFox. Today I clicked a link to this website that was inside one of of Lam's posts. Apparently he refered to the website via EvC Forum: All Topics.
When I entered the site via EvC Forum: All Topics, I was no longer logged in.
I guess this happens due to the cookie mechanism you're using? I guess because the host name is different, cookie retrieval fails? I was surprised. Suddenly my paging and preferences were gone!
Anyhoo.

Re: EvC Forum Finally Switches to Daylight Savings Time
Just another reason why I wish Japan observed daylight savings time. Can I enter a bug here for that? Do you have any clout with the Japanese gov't? I don't need the sun rising before 5am, thanks.
