Re: proof is in the tasting of the pudding
Hi Holmes,
I think I've made my points and you've made yours. If I could see a light at the end of the tunnel telling me that we were making progress and that within a few posts we'd be finding some common ground then I'd continue, but it looks like this back and forth will just continue on until post 300.
I'll conclude by saying that I don't really believe the recent events really had much to do with the defintion of "opinion" or "position", which we seem to be cutting more and more finely. I don't believe it is realistic to expect to be able to represent such fine distinctions with brevity or in a way that people will be able to keep straight in the Forum Guidelines.
What I believe the issue really boils down to is people who put a great deal of themselves into the site not feeling appreciated or respected by myself. My meager contributions since the beginning of my current project must make it seem like I'm just sitting back and letting others do the work while giving them little voice.
One common sentiment I've seen often expressed recently is, "This is Percy's site and he can run it the way he wants." That's true, but I don't feel like running a dictatorship. But I also began this site with some very clear goals, and those goals have not changed within my mind one bit. The people who joined with me over time to help make the site work shared my vision to at least the extent that they wanted to be a part of it. As time went on, and especially recently, I became more and more disconnected from the day-to-day running of the site (not that I don't check all the forums daily) while spending more and more time on site development. I think this situation has contributed in significant ways to recent events.
The contributions of those who are gone are greatly appreciated, we miss their presence enormously, but if they choose not to come back then we must move on.

So when you say 'ID folks' you mean creationists, its good to know we are all on the same page.
I believe some creationists are not IDists but folks who use different renderings of the word/term creationist. I've learned to specify IDist since on occasion being challenged by folks that creationism may go beyond IDism in scope. For example, I believe Jar relatively recently referred to himself as a creationist, though I'm not positive my memory servers me right on that.

What I really miss about Ringo and Jar[...] is that they often taught people to think through questions rather than pronounce the absolute truth from a position of personal infallibility.

Amen.
And Socrates doesn't leave Athens on a whim. You have to wonder who put hemlock into the water supply.

Thanks for responding to my points in your usual congenial manner, Modulus. I believe I've said enough, unless I think of something I consider to be significant.

Creationist Definition
IMO, Jar referred to himself as a creationist to emphasize the point he believed God created the universe, by way of what we necessarily observe as the rules of science, including evolution and the obviously old Earth. He did this to try to show people one could believe in God, indeed worship God, without having to believe in the Bible as the only way God may speak to us or believe in various self-appointed, "I'm closer to god than you are, the only way to god is through me," false prophets.
He also wanted to emphasize that Young Earth Creationism is only one HUMAN interpretation of the creation and the Bible, not the be-all, end-all, of Christianity as is often, and, in his and my interpretation, falsely, promoted.
Remember the saying "The Bible is the map, not the territory."
At least that is my understanding of his views from the forum and the many hours in chat discussing this very concept. I can't really speak for Jar, but only at best try to convey what I think he meant.

Re: Creationist Definition
that sounds fairly accurate. I don't know about the whole "show" concept, as to whether that was the reason he did it, or if that was just a natural consequence of his belief(ves).
can inactive people still chat? my guess is no, but . . .

I'm setting this here primarily because I want to let people know that my sudden disappearance ISN'T about what has just been going on. But also because it is a thread which seems to include notices of people leaving (so why start another?),
I have just (an hour ago) received some extremely bad and life altering information. I may very well be back at some point in several months or so. But for at least the next two months I don't see how I will be able to post physically, nor if so in a psych state to post in a way which would be any use to anyone.
Goodbye (for a while).
