I use subtitles on the All Topics page to see if a thread is looking interesting or not. Good subtitles are also useful in the specific topic's message index page. Adminnemooseus

And another bump.
Adminnemooseus, in message 1 writes: People, the proper use of subtitles can be useful. For example: I while back I was looking for a specific message in a topic I thought it was located in. I looked throught the subtitles in the topic index, but they were of no help. Quite a while back, I posted a "topic drift alert", with a subtitle (as I recall) of something like "Terminally Off Topic?". Ironicly, there was an on-topic reply to that message, which generated a string of on-topic messages with the subtitle of "Re: Terminally Off Topic?". Bottom line: What do you say, that you try putting useful subtitles on your messages? Just like a quality functional topic title, quality functional subtitles could be useful for guiding and organizing the discussion. One recent example of a long string of worthless subtitles is the "Re: 'Out of Bedrock' theory" at the Was there a worldwide flood? topic. It originated with a very minor "Flintstones" message, and then refused to die. There are plenty of other examples. Adminnemooseus

My suggestion is to enter the thread title into the POM message, not the title. IMO, lengthy titles confluge the title with the POM message. People, how about trying to create message subtitles that give some indication of what's in the message?
The individual topic indexes can be kind of like the table of contents of a book. Think of each message being a little chapter of the topic "book". Put things in the "table of contents" that indicates what your new "chapter" is about. Adminnemooseus

The problem is it isn't required to insert a subtitle to submit a post. We all know that most of the time people will forget there is even a subtitle fill in box.
My suggestion is we require people to fill in the subtitle box.

As has been suggested twice already, why not just make subtitles automatically blank and require people to fill them in in order to post? It's very easy to forget about them, especially if you're used to using forums that don't bother with subtitles.

Yes, blank them and add a check box to "Reuse Subtitle" so in the not-so-common case where reusing the subtitle makes sense it is easy but the default is to a blank which is better than what is happening now.

An interesting idea. As someone who uses subtitles I do find posts that have nothing to do with the subtitle distracting.

I use subtitles on the All Topics page to see if a thread is looking interesting or not. I too look at the subtitles, and several times I have been attracted by a subtitle to a new thread, and look for the original subtitle post, and sometimes I give up when it seems to go on forever on other issues. So it would be nice to have the subtitle be coded (re: [msg=subtitle_msg_number]) to link to the post that started the subtitle -- see example above. This way, once we are beyond the first reply you can still like back to the start. I don't know how this will nest with following replies, so I intend to test this. It would be nice to have an idea of how nested the reply was - ie keep tacking on Re: for each reply. Hence the (Re: (Re: etc)) above. I fully agree that subtitles should either form a subtopic or describe the focus of the post, but some people just aren't focuessed .... by our ability to understand Rebel American Zen Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. • • • Join the effort to solve medical problems, AIDS/HIV, Cancer and more with Team EvC! testing stacked reference links
Yes, it appears to work, but the second link gets cut off by the first. Now what does this do to the subtitle limits and what shows on All Topics? But there is a glitch in the code that ends up in the subtitle (I corrected it out to reduce the clutter)
AND it explodes the subtitle in the ALL TOPICS window. Any chance we could refer to a post by subtitle rather than by message? (or code it to exclude the "(message 24)" from the link). Hi Percy! Enjoy. Something that helps define and will help index your messages content.
I'm very tired of seeing "Re: To my numerous opponents", "Re: Topic Please?", "Re: you are ignorant", and "Re: Please!". And I'm sure there are plenty of other worthless subtltles just below the crop listed at the alltopics page. Adminnemooseus

OK, we now have "Re: An Initial Question" as the only subtitle* of a topic currently at 93 messages. A bad subtitle that refuses to die (what is that initial question?).
