Re: brennakimi from another topic
Why not be courtious and use them?
laziness.
also, in some older languages, two different cases just don't exist. and in some, they're just used very differently. for instance, my signature has letters of two cases: consonants and vowels.
the word "case" itself comes from the printing press, although capitalization itself is older, dating back to middle if not early english. the capitals were apperently contained in the UPPER case and rest in the lower case of letters.
and of course, some would argue that lower-case lettering is easier to read, because of the ascenders and descenders, or something.

Re: The "shift key impaired" are starting to piss me off!
hey, people are talking about me!
Hey, Arachnophilia is studying the original Hebrew Torah,
no, not quite yet. still working on learning hebrew... i'll be taking a hebrew class this fall.
The benefits of capitalization have probably just escaped his notice as being such a minor improvement compared to the space bar and the puncuation keys.
heh, sort of. but it's really just laziness. i don't like typing with my pinkies. when i write papers for school, however, i do certainly use capital letters in their proper places. i consider it the difference between formal and informal speech.
also, your sentance should look like this:
klstsprthtwrtdrqrbdlhsststnrnalclbbknthaylltca
ghnadgswtafanmatwrtsaddntnahwhyywthsasthylrlcscbsth
gnthmosylbbrpsantcnptastnwhwhywhbtsmtanthssmrf
ntlvafayrththdnastsrvnatdltascthwpamcnts
i've added line breaks out of curtousey, since it won't wrap properly right-to-left. but no spaces, no vowels, words that start with vowels replaced with "a" which is a consonant.

Re: The "shift key impaired" are starting to piss me off!
I've always enjoyed Arach's content and respected his contributions and have learned a lot from his posts and never even noticed lack of capitalization.
thanks!
My point is that it could be a whole lot worse, a whole lot. It doesn't bother me at all, but then I grew up loving the poety of cummings.
no, i'm just not 1337 3n0u64.

Re: The "shift key impaired" are starting to piss me off!
but I think I made my point that in the great scheme of written works lack of capitalization is not an impediment to comprehension
well, hebrew does have two cases: consonants and vowels. see the little dots below the hebrew letters in my signature? those are the vowels. they are written that way, so as not to intrude on the text in holy works, since the originals didn't have the vowels. the earliest hebrew manuscript we have, the masoretic, DOES have spacing and vowels and line breaks. so if i wanted to write similar to the masoretic,
SiTH eKiL GNiTHeMoS KooL DLouW TiA
granted, i can't get the vowels actually BELOW the consonsants, but it's still really distracting in english.

Re: brennakimi from another topic
Bottom line: Right now I could go to most any message from any of the "shift key impaired", and do a suspension because of a forum rule violation. RAZD might first need a formal warning, but both brennakimi and Arachnophilia have obviously already seen my request.
would that be fair, do you suspect?

i've been known to do that sometimes. but usually only when i'm trying to be annoying, or uh, filibuster a topic.

Re: Hey Ooook...
Arach's posts look fine to me
you must not read very carefully. i rather consistently mis-conjugate words and leave out words. in fact, i imagine sometimes i sound downright retarded. i've had more than one argument confused by bad wording, and one recently where the whole thing hinged on me reading a word wrong.
i think maybe i'm lysdexic.
whereas those of some posters need to be read 10 times before you can extract any meaning - even if corrently capitalised.
i can't make any sense out of brad's posts, no matter HOW hard i try.

Re: brennakimi from another topic
This poor dear believes she is channeling the holy spirit when she types in caps.
really? let me try.
this is me talking.
AND THIS IS GOD!
hi, how are you god?
DOING QUITE FINE TODAY, THANKS.
so what do you think of the capitalization issues here, god?
I THINK IT MAKES ME SOUND LIKE I'M SHOUTING ALL THE TIME, WHICH DOESN'T HELP THE WHOLE WHAT WITH THE WHOLE NEGATIVE "ANGRY GOD" IMAGE I HAVE.

Maybe the people who don't use caps are annoyed by having to reach all-the-way over to the shift key.
personally, it's just a pinky-finger thing. i tend not to use them, or at least like using them. not totally sure why. i use them to cut and paste (always the left hand, curiously) and for html-style brackets. but not parenthesis exclamation points or ctrl-z's. when i somehow use my ring finger for the shift key. thank god for the [ ] ubb/db brackets here!
It just happens automatically for me so its no problem, but if they have to think about pressing shift everytime, I could see how that would be annoying.
it's oddly gotten to the point where i generally don't think about it. and come to think about, i don't on proper academic papers either -- my word processor capitalizes automatically.
But, when I read something without caps, the voice in my head doesn't get quieter, so it doesn't bother me a bit.
yeah, that's sort of the way i figured it would be. although it was really weird to see sylas post in all-lowers. lol
