Simplest:

Maybe just show the career aggregate total cheers and the moving total of cheers over the last 100 posts. Or last 100 days even.

By having the career aggregate cheers, even Faith would chalk up some good numbers to compare to a newbie evolutionist. Of course it would be easy to divide the career cheers by the career posts and Faith wouldn't do so well then.

But there may also be the problem Bobby Fisher complained about vis' a vis' the Russians intentionally drawing games against each other. For example, I could always cheer my brother and he could always cheer me, and we'd both be artificially inflated, relative to the rest. There could be roving cliques of mutual cheering spoiling the numbers.

I dunno.

In my croquet league I had an ongoing total season average and a Last 8 average, but the last 8 was weighted 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, so that the most recent game counted 8 times as much as the game from 7 games before. Games older were scrolled off in the Last 8 calculation. I also kept records for who had the highest Last 8 during the season. This does not seem usable here.

Over in the Expecting Rain Discussions forum they seem to have Total Post thresholds that get you titles like Silver Member, Titanium Member, and so on, that seem to reward sheer volume - although I think the admins over there give nods to those members who do a lot of the volunteer work of the board. Not a good system, but then the individual posts cannot be cheered or "liked". And they don't have the Reply Threading that works so well here.

Re: Ideally, a (+) for a very good message, a (-) for a very bad message
RAZD suggests:

(number of + rated posts / total posts) in last 30 days

I think 30 days is too small a sample.

In honor of the YEC members, and Dr. Cosby, how about 40 days and 40 nights (960 hours) and wait for the sewers to back up?

30 introduces that pesky infinite 1/3 into the decimal representation for those who would divide the waters.

But also why not just show total posts + total cheers. People that post a lot should get some relative recognition over those that tend to lurk, such as myself. The use of Total posts would also encourage breaking up huge, long posts into smaller pieces. (hmm, now who could i be talking about?) And by total cheers, I mean a single post that gets 4 cheers should get 4 points.

So I would suggest:

(total posts in the last 960 hours + total cheers over the last 960 hours = value), written just as a simple integer equation: p + c = v

For example, as an illustration, a fictional member of this board could have

Last 40 day Value: 243p + 88c = 331

appearing below this fictional member's other info.

The OCD folks here (like me) could calculate 331/960 = .3448 approx. Other OCD types might just divide by 40 and get their 8.275 per day number.

We could keep records. Who reached the highest v ever? But then we'd have to declare a post that merely says "Hi." a non-post. The post would have to say something germane. But, agh, that introduces judging. Agh, agh, agh, agh.

Then there is a question about getting a half point or something for merely cheering...i say NO. However, I do admit that my arm could be easily twisted on that question.

EDIT: I came up with the units v is measured in:

Floods

So now the line might appear:

Last 40 day Value: 243p + 88c = 331 floods

Re:Jerk Factor
Our Most Honorable Winged One replies:

I think we should also have a way to factor in the number of cheers and Jeers this fictional member has made.

We could call this the "Jerk Factor".

Yeah!...!...i was looking into that (see the bottom of my post) and my jerkfactor brain hipshot said "No." But I can be influenced.

Maybe Jeers-Cheers..? dunno, gratuitous Cheering is bad. Kneejerk jeering is bad.

Well and good, Coyote, but this will really discourage YECs and even OECs.

I don't think we want that.

Re: Self Rating
No way, dude. No way.....

or make them count opposite:

you rank your post a +, you get a -.
you rank your post a -, you get a +.

Percy wisely already eliminated any chance of self-rating.

Re: Ideally, a (+) for a very good message, a (-) for a very bad message
Another thing. Posts of The Month. Great stuff. Love the way that there are nevertheless no actual winners. Just nominees. Nominated count should be added into the Flood formula (possible seconds & thirds). Maybe the coefficient should be 8 for nominations, 4 for 2nds & 1 for others. The cheer coefficient might be upped to 2....

So now the line might appear:

Last 40 day Value: 243p + 88c*2 + 2n*8 + 1s*4 + 1other = 440 floods

Is this in tune now?

But it might encourage better posts from them?

That's why the coefficients in my Flood formula could change.

Cheers x 2, POTMs x 8....or something we can all agree on.

Modulous blesses my hopeful bottle in the ocean with:

Good luck with that.

indeed.

But, to get back to the point. I think something has to be done. I am *blank* now. Anyone with any ranking at all is now a 10.0. Something needs to be done, as Catholic Scientist said in Message 178:

This current thing is worthless. Do something.

Re: A better measure...
Modulous has an input!

1 cheer makes it worth 1.5
2 cheers makes it worth 2
3 cheers makes it worth 4.
4 cheers 8
5 cheers 16

1 jeer makes it worth 0.8
2 cheers makes it 0.4
3 cheers makes it .2
4 cheers make it worth 0.1

okay. are these multipliers? e.g. i make a post. 1 pt. someone cheers, 1.5 pts. Someone jeers o.8 or 1.2 points. another cheer, 2 pts or 1.2 points or 2.2 points? WTF?

Re: Message Ratings Now Working
I'm thinking that using a TIME-BASED cut-off may be wrong. Just use the last 40 posts. Some participants may disappear for good reasons known to themselves. Save the historical last 40. This way, if an old poster resurfaces, we can see where they are coming from.

??

Kindly,

Prototypical writes:

Of course, the lack of a negative option fouls the whole thing. Its like ribbons for everyone and that is juvenile.

But it's ribbons per post or month, depending on whether Percy decides to keep 30 days or change to last 40 posts or whatever. The lack of negative Jeers removes the Dog-Piling juvenile aspect. A baseball player cannot get a negative hit (well, actually he can by grounding into a double play, but maybe I should stick to Field Goal Percentage in the NBA as an analogy - you cannot get a negative Field Goal).

I still think Posts Of The Month nominations should be counted - and counted as more valuable than just your common Cheer.

HolygamolyGodfreyDaniel, why am I a 10.0 this morning!! Eeeeek!!

I would think encouraging members to make well-thought posts should be a goal that gets reflected in the left side panel.

Looks like the rating system is on hiatus. That's okay, it was hard to understand how mine would change up & down with no activity on my part.

Percy answers Cat Sci:

Cat Sci writes:

What is it that it is rating? How "good" of a member you are? Or how much people like you? Or how good the content you post is?

The label "Member Rating" will be under control of the site manager.

Do you want suggestions on changing the formula that calculates it?

Sure. I've been struggling with this for a long time and have changed the formula at least twice that I remember.

Perhaps right after the total lifetime posts, you could put total lifetime "likes", then if you want to get fancy, the total likes over the last 100 posts. That would require a linked closed loop list of the last 100 for each member with a pointer to the next post to be replaced by a new one. Cool software stuff. I used to keep a Last 8 for my croquet players that way. C program...

But maybe rule out the Coffee House??? Baby pictures? I dunno. I guess they're ok in their own way there.
