Hi all!
I'll be implementing a redesign of the rating system sometime soon, and when I release it all current message ratings will be deleted. The redesigned approach will focus on the positive, and it will tie in to some kind of post-of-the-month type system. My thinking could change, but right now I'm considering a two step approach where first a post must be nominated, and only then can voting on it begin. Member's wouldn't get ratings, but if they've had post-of-the-month nominations then that will be indicated in some way with the rest of their information in message lists, and in their profile. Comments, ideas and feedback are, of course, welcome.

I've only made design progress, no recoding yet. There will be a link to click to nominate a post for consideration as a Post of the Month (or whatever period is selected through the control panel), and then there must be a second. This places a copy of the post in a thread where it may be voted for with other nominated posts, and where comments and discussion may take place.
I'm am doing some preliminary recoding by revamping the way that internal board settings are referenced and updated by the board software. This will probably get released tonight, but there will be no functional changes.

Thanks for the feedback. I pretty much agree with it all.
But I think I'll still have a Hall of Shame, because thinking forward about marketing I think there are contexts where it could work pretty well. When I release the new POTM code I'll have the Wall of Shame enabled initially (features like this can be enabled and disabled through the control panel), then I'll turn it off as soon as I'm sure it's working properly. By the way, the names "Hall of Fame" and "Hall of Shame" are just the names that happened to pop into my head. They actual names will be settable through the control panel. Using other names can change how they're perceived quite a bit. For example, what if the "Hall of Shame" were instead called "Whoops!" or some other capricious or whimsical name? Making such names settable is already done for other board functions. For example, instead of "Director, Administrator, Moderator, Member" I could change it to "Admiral, Captain, Lieutenant, Sailor."

Surely "God, deity, angel, mortal" would be more appropriate.... How about "Nobel laureate, scientist, lab assistant, layman"?

Coding? Easy.
User interface, 2 choices? Still easy. Usually the best approach is obvious. User interface, more than 2 choices? Not so easy. Has to be thought through carefully. Radio buttons? Select boxes (multiple choice possible). Select menu (multiple choice possible). Right click menu? Dynamic menu? Database, 2 choices? Easy, boolean field. Database, more than 2 choices? Not so easy. Text field that requires processing? Two tables? Table per type of hall? As you might guess, a good part of my time is spent staring out the window!

Interesting idea. I've added it to the list of possible enhancements.

Hmmm, not a bad idea. I could add a preference to the member profile page: "Select which ID to use for cheers/jeers: ".
Unfortunately real life has been busy lately and it's likely to continue.

Adminnemooseus made the changes.
Many didn't like the rating system when I first released it, but it's a complex feature and complex features are very vulnerable to breakage if they aren't tested when software changes are made, and complex features are very difficult to test. Leaving the message rating system turned on makes it easier for me to discover problems after I make software changes. But I haven't made any software changes over the past year. Development took a hiatus because of interference from the real world (nothing dire - work got busy, which happens every so often, though never before for an entire year). So while I'm not making changes I don't mind if most of the message rating feature is turned off. I resumed development last week but have no release schedule as I'm still unsure of my available time. When I release the next version I will turn on all the features of the message rating system so I can make sure it is working properly. About the suggestions, improvements to the message rating system are on the todo list, including driving the POTMs from it and limiting the votes in some way (think Tanypteryx) but there's no schedule at present.

Tanypteryx writes: I apologize for screwing it up for everyone else. No apology necessary, it wasn't your fault, Adminnemooseus just thought the message ratings needed to be reined back. What we as a community have discovered is that there are many ways to think about the message ratings. A vote (cheer or jeer) could be about content, style, quality, position, entertainment value, etc., and there's no way to know. Board administration should be clear about what a vote means, but we haven't done that here because the goal (or at least my goal) is just to test the software. I think you should continue voting just as you have. But what your style makes clear is that I have to implement an option for board administration to limit votes if they so chose, and that's all I was trying to say. I wasn't trying to say that you're voting too much. We haven't put any rules in place about how one is supposed to use one's votes.

A hoverbox of info will appear if you hover over your member rating. If you can suggest how to make it more informative I'll update it.

Tanypteryx writes: Maybe there should be a row of jeer and cheer buttons. One set each for content, quality, position, etc. and maybe you could only vote for one attribute per post. It probably would defeat the purpose of multiple choice if there was an "all of the above" button. I'm thinking along the same lines. It would have to be customizable by board admins.
I have to say thank you for the work you have put in to this site. It functions better than any other forum that I have used and has some great features to pinpoint who and what you are responding to. No other forum does that well. Thanks, I like the response tracking features too. Before writing this software I was participating at bulletin boards that discussed bulletin board software, and I suggested such features, but everyone "looked" at me like I had three heads. It seemed like an obvious feature to me, but not so much to other bulletin board developers.

In addition to what Jon said, your member rating is relative to other member's. The member with the most votes gets a 10, the member with the least votes gets a 1. If you have the most votes you'll get the 10, but if someone else then receives additional votes giving them more than you, then they'll get the 10 and your member rating will decline. It's on a sliding scale.
