Whoever calls me ignorant shares my own opinion. Sorrowfully and tacitly I recognize my ignorance, when I consider how much I lack of what my mind in its craving for knowledge is sighing for... I console myself with the consideration that this belongs to our common nature. - Francesco Petrarca
"Nothing is easier than to persuade people who want to be persuaded and already believe." - another Petrarca gem.
Ignorance is a most formidable opponent rivaled only by arrogance; but when the two join forces, one is all but invincible.

Re: Message Ratings Now Working
The way the rating is calculated hasn't changed.
Excuse me? Bring back the jeer and you may have a point. I ask again, what kind of rating system does not allow for negative votes?
Glorious mediocrity, the battle squeak of the politically correct.

Or, better yet, do away with the whole juvenile popularity contest altogether. To adults, it means nothing anyway.

I don't know. I am interested in who cheers what but there doesn't seem to be any way of telling why they cheered. If I say two things in a post (and sometimes I do), which one was appreciated?
As for "caring' about the member rating, if you're only posting for the sake of posting you might as well do your mental masturbation without wearing out your keyboard. I like to have some feedback.

I guess that one could characterize it like that. I see it more as an acknowledgment of quality or as ringo says, an easy way to provide and receive feedback. Which is, as far as I can tell, the reason that any of us comment here to begin with.
Of course, the lack of a negative option fouls the whole thing. Its like ribbons for everyone and that is juvenile.

But it's ribbons per post or month, depending on whether Percy decides to keep 30 days or change to last 40 posts or whatever. The lack of negative Jeers removes the Dog-Piling juvenile aspect. A baseball player cannot get a negative hit (well, actually he can by grounding into a double play, but maybe I should stick to Field Goal Percentage in the NBA as an analogy - you cannot get a negative Field Goal).
I still think Posts Of The Month nominations should be counted - and counted as more valuable than just your common Cheer.

Ohhh no. You did something really bad. Mine is a 3.
Look around and you see those small numbers on some very unsuspecting names. Obviously the rating system has reverse the scale with 0 (best) to 10 (worst).
The rest of us are heading to 0. You gotta catch up xongsmith.

I think Posts of the Month are thoroughly irrelevant.

??
Curious - why would you think that?
I would think encouraging members to make well-thought posts should be a goal that gets reflected in the left side panel.

Months go by without any nominations. Hence, they're irrelevant to many of us.
I have a short attention span and a little dyslexia so I tend not to read long posts. Posts of the Month may have some value for long posts but the Cheer/Jeer system works better for short posts. If the forum software is intended for broader use - i.e. outside the EvC club - I suspect that the general public would make far more use of Cheer/Jeer than Post of the Month.

We often hear creationists complaining that they don't get a fair shake at EvC. Well, let the bells ring out and the banners fly because that situation has been remedied - EvC has now become Backwards World, just as the creationists wished. When I make a post my rating goes up and when I get a cheer my rating goes down.

Well now I'm not seeing anybody who isn't rated lower than a 4.0. So I don't think this calculation is working very well.
And Admin is rated at 1.0

Ratings window restored to 90 days
The (-) votes should all precede the last 90 days.
I don't know if Percy/Admin needs to give the system a special goose for this to have an effect.

Or something like that.
