Yesterday All My Troubles Seemed So far Away
What was your first ever EVC post? Do you read it now and cringe with embarrassment? Do you read it now and feel the glow of self congratulatory consistency? Do you read it now and wonder when that once polite, reasonable and respectful person that you used to be became such a pompous self righteous arse?
This thread is intended as an opportunity for a bit of self-deprecating fun. Maybe some serious reflection if the mood so takes you. Especially if you have an EVC "journey" to tell.
I am particularly interested in the first/early posts of those regular members who have been posting for years. I am intrigued to see how those posters have developed over time and how they view their evolution here. But all are welcome. "Young" and "old".
Here is my first ever post Message 34. Rather boring if anything on reflection. Hopefully others will have better examples than I.
(Note: This thread isn't about debating the issues raised in linked to first posts. This thread is about people not points and as such is intended to be fairly uncontentious)

Hopefully you've been put wise in the meantime
My position has arguably softened. But did you follow the link and read your reply at the time?

Old Timers
2001. Blimey!
Had a quick look through the thread you linked to and was surprised at who else was around at that time.
Percy obviously. Nosy I guess I kind of assumed had been around since the beginning of time as well. But I had no idea that Mark24 and Wounded King were such old timers!

Re: My first post...embarrassing.
Cool thread Straggler
I am glad you like it!
I thought I was setting the record straight with this pathetic gem. LOL
Oh the indiscretions of youth! Actually having read your link yours is not too bad. As part of this trip down memory lane I also looked up my first topic proposal. This does kinda make me wince with embarrassment. Ouch. Faith Science - Logically Indefensible
I came here because I was writing some blogs on creationist and the issues with ID in schools.
I came here because I randomly ended up debating a bunch of guys on a general chat/discussion site about evolution. Just as I was patting myself on the back, basking in the self congratulatory glow of victory and "impressing" them with my subtle wit they revealed to me that they were high school kids. I felt pretty silly.
I had chanced across this site whilst searching for material on evolution and decided to see if I could debate people who were not still learning how to tie their shoe laces. I came in expecting the same sort of level of argument I had just encountered and was put right pretty quickly.
But what I found was some of the smartest people I've ever had a chance to talk to.
Yep.
Discussions on topics that most people don't bother looking into.
Yep.
It's been a lot of fun and hopefully I'll make a few friends in the process (which I have).
Yep

Re: Bluejay's Greatest Hits
Hey Bluejay
This was my first post. It was a little pedantic, and I seem to have thought I was being more insightful than I really was.
Well there was no messin with your first contribution. Straight in there with the hard science! I think many (including myself) probably started with a toe dipping shorty of a post to test the waters. But having looked at yours I would never have guessed it was the work of an EvC virgin.
I guess that is the difference between those who actually know what they are talking about and those of us who are just pretending most of the time.

Is This The First Ever EVC Post?
Message 1
I just looked up Percy's topic index and went to the very first post listed on the assumption that he would have made the very first EvC post.
Apparently there was a precursor to EvC? Moose alludes to it above in this thread and Mod mentioned it when the two of us met up in London.

I found your original post and followed through the conversation in that thread. I could not help but notice this:

Re: The Diary of EvC
I know I lurked for at least two years before posting.
Two years! Wow!
The worry that came with the posting was so much that I lurked for another 3 months before my second post...
And look at you now!! Let this be a call to arms for all those long term lurkers who have never bitten the bullet.
synesthesia is still one of the coolest medical conditions I've ever heard about, and I still wish I had it
I had to look this up. How truly fascinating. I was at college with a guy (pure maths student) who said he saw equations in colours and that he could manipulate them on the basis of eliminating "green" or whatever. I never had the foggiest what he was talking about but he was bloody clever.

Re: Yesterday All My Troubles Seemed So far Away
Great idea, Straggler.
Glad you like it. Actually it was the two of us dragging up old posts in recent discussions that first got me thinking about this. How views might change or soften as a result of participating at places like EvC. And how we look back on our previous selves. I also thought it would be interesting to see how the longterm EvC stalwarts in particular started off.
Its a little embarassing seeing how much I've learned since then contrasted with how much I thought I knew back then.
Your first post is pretty forthright and provoked a lot of reaction. You obviously started as you meant to go on

Re: Thanks EVC
My first post isn't anything spectacular, something about measuring the speed of the propogation of gravity. However looking at my earlier posts I cringe at how poor my ability to explain things used to be. I really have to credit this site and some of its members with improving my ability to communicate physics to others.
I've notice the improvement it has made to lectures and talks I've had to give. So if I ever manage to write my dream book of quantum mechanics for interested non-physicists there will be a few acknowledgements.
Well I doubt I am alone in thinking it is us who should be thanking you. Yours are some of the best explanations of stuff I have always wanted to understand that I have ever had.
If there is ever a greatest post hall of fame type thing here there are several of yours on quantum field theory and related matters that would get my vote.

Chicken Or Egg
WOW no difference! here is the idiot (me), wandering into a battlefield of long arms that keeps arising itself time after time.
Well......
It is because the old subject has arisen that I started dragging up old posts and then started this thread. That doesn't (necessarily) mean that the same argument has been raging all that time. Though I can see how one might come to that conclusion. And to be honest that is kinda the nature of EvC (or indeed any other primary issue debate forum). The same stuff does resurface time and time again. Even if new angles are found and individual positions taken. No harm in that per se.
i'll sit this one out....
Well this isn't intended to be part of that anyway.

Reluctant Poster?
As first posts go yours seems one to be rather proud of rather than embarrassed.
My main question is...... Why such a reluctant poster now? We don't hear enough from you IMHO.

First Topic? Because I Am Bored......
I came here, as I recall, following Rrhain from some site I forget completely.
Life before EvC? Never. And you and Rrhain together? How long have you two been foruming together in total?
I'm still here but I've learned not to try to post a reply to everything.
I think there is a lot to be learnt from this. I know that I am all too prone to attempting to try and answer every point in every post. A more "focussed" approach would probably serve me better but once I get going I just get carried away........
RAZD writes:
how about your first topic?
Because I am kinda bored (son asleep, wife in bed with a cold) and because I found the answers to my original "first post" question interesting I was wondering if people would be interested in taking up RAZD's suggestion of highlighting and commenting on their first topic proposal?
As I mentioned to Oni in Message 16 my first topic was a very embarressing and overly assertive declaration against creation science as a logical concept Faith Science - Logically Indefensible. I am not proud of this one at all.
But we live and learn. Which I guess is why we are here at all.....

Given that many EvC old timers have recently rejoined I thought I would see if anyone was interested in sharing their thoughts on this topic.

In this topic that form of rambling "off-topic" is very much "on-topic".
