Iano, most of our fundamental beliefs, in the sense of 'where our heart is', are not chosen rationally or consciously. It is not possible to deliberately choose what we really believe. It is not a matter of free will. Belief cannot be willed.
Therefore, in the Christian scheme, God condemns those who do not believe for something they have no conscious control over.
This is cruel behaviour.
