Piling on
The problem you are pointing out, Limbo, is called "piling on" around here. I agree with you that it is a problem and some of use try to hold back to limit how much of a problem it is.
There is something that Jerry or you can do though. Most of the time, when piling on is happening, the same things are being said by several different people. Sometimes they are said in different ways but are still the same point (this could actually be taken as helpful since one way of saying it may be more clear than another). In that case it is not necessary to answer each person individually. If the point is dealt with once, clearly and to the point then that can be refered to when others ask it over again.
However, if the point is not dealt with then it tends to cause even more piling on. When Jerry deals with the issues all or most of the other posters will move one. Some, of course, may need a simpler or differently worded form of the answer. That just helps Jerry develop his argument into a more powerfully stated one.
I have been watching a lot of debates here for awhile now. We have a few scientifically minded individuals who can come across as arrogant and insulting from the get-go but only two or three of them. If you watch a debate develop I think you will see that the insults start when someone gets nasty first or simply refuses to debate. I would like you to point out where Jerry has been treated nastily first (or at all).
A number of disparaging remarks have made about the content of his posts for sure. To handle that all he has to do is rebute them clearly.
