IMO, America's take on anything,....erm...not American, is trash. When I was in Kuwait I had some real curry and I loved it! I had some when I came back stateside and it was for shit.
As for mince pies? I have never had one, but I make a point for myself to be "cultural" and I would love to try one. They are meat pies, yes?

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Re: Mincemeat and old meat
holy hell I love me some Doners. Spent a few years in Germany, and as you said, they sop up the beer quite nicely. However, they have forever tainted my taste for Gyro's.

Re: Mincemeat and old meat
Grits is roughly ground corn. I personally eat it for breakfast with butter and sugar.

Re: Around the Wordl in 80 Meals
I really can't remember if I ever bested or matched a local at anything.
I tried to outdrink a German local within my first week there. it wasn't pretty. I woke up at 4 am, underground, lying in a pool of my own (I hope) vomit.

Re: Save a Tree, Eat a Squirrel
A good option if you're not squeamish about catching, killing and prepping your own meat. Squirrel cage traps are about 20 and are very easy to use.
A case of brew, a lawn chair and a BB gun would also work quite well.
