The bonds are simply an assumption.
Then explain why the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
has a whole chapter on "Bond Dissociation Energies."
For example the bond between hydrogen & oxygen is 429.91KiloJoule/mole (page 9-57). That, to me, doesn't seem like an assumption.
