You could try Ubuntu 10 for free. As long as he doesn't need to use WiFi, sure! It's amazing to me that Linux hasn't solved their wireless internet problem in the 15-odd years I've been looking at Linux distros. Just the other day I grabbed an old PPC version of Ubuntu to pop on my old iBook G4, hoping to do something useful with it. Everything worked great except that there was zero support for the AirPort. Well, that was basically the one thing I needed to have working, so goodbye Ubuntu. Linux: still not ready for prime time.

We got stuck with... Swedish or something when I was a child after we needed to reinstall after a virus. My parents waited a few months before replacing it, so.. yeah that was a mess to navigate, although it felt rather exotic I guess..

Well, seems like you solved it. Also, my windows version is in English, so I wouldn't know the exact words that are used in Dutch either.

I'm not all that familiar with using linux on non-x86 hardware, but people using Ubuntu 11 seem able to get wifi to work on their intel-PCs. I've read about some situations which required fiddling, but not of any problems that could not be solved.
For cash strapped folks who aren't going to run pirated Windows, perhaps doing a little bit of fiddling to get wifi to work isn't the worst thing in the world. Also, I understand that the most recent version of Wine does a great job of running MS Office stuff, if open office isn't a good enough substitute.
Linux: still not ready for prime time. Maybe not in all cases for all people. I certainly cannot speak to the hole in support that you found. But given the wide range of hardware that Linux runs well on, I think this slogan is not quite so universal. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. If you buy the right wireless card, they'll have made linux drivers for it. Or maybe you can use NDIS-Wrapper to wrap up the Windows binary you need and, if you're lucky, the card will work. Neither of those things is true for my old Mac, unfortunately. But, I mean, I've built an off-the-shelf PC with an off-the-shelf wireless PCI card from Best Buy, and had every version of Linux refuse to see it. The sorry state of affairs in Linux wireless card support, to my understanding, stems from Linus' refusal to allow his kernel to be polluted by something as quotidian as a wireless driver. As much as Linux claims to be about open-source, it's every bit as much about saying "no, sorry, you can't do that, because of our strong ideological commitment to a contradictory principle."

Its about binary blobs, and it dosent matter what Linus want. Any one can add binary blobs, like networking and GPU drivers if they want to. And make a distribution with it. Like Ubuntu do... If the manufacturers would open source their drivers, they would be implemented in the kernel. I have mainly used Linux on x86 and AMD64 computers, and its been 7-8 years since i had any networking problems. The only exception i can think of, is my dads Asus EEE. He ran some taste of Linux on it, i dont remember which, but wireless didnt work untill after some fiddling.

There's no problem with running purchased commercial software on linux. Quite a few people do. Sure, there's stuff that doesn't work. But that's because vendors have decided not to provide it. If MS were to have a MS-Office version for linux, quite a few people would purchase it in preference to open-office/Libre-office. The only ideological commitment that prevents this, is Microsoft's ideological commitment to monopolism.Jesus was a liberal hippie

Dick Cheney has a new (to him) heart. What is the probability that his former friends won't even be able to tell that it's him?

I could, but Linux requires far too much fucking with and it will be an HTPC/Print server only AND be for my wife. Even as a print server alone, Linux is too much to fuck with. Sure, for basic internet browsing, Linux "just works" and for hardcore *nix heads it's fine. But I am neither and it is too much to deal with. Plus, Linux still hasn't got robust enough HTPC software.

I can imagine the last three words heard from that heart as it was being placed in Cheney:
"Oh God, No!"

Did they surgically implant it? I assumed Cheney just ate it.

Is there an easy mental note one could use to determine which usage/spelling should be used? Something similar to "I before E except after C".
