Re: The Fun Part Coming Soon!
Hi anglagard, how's things?
However, having to deny trigonometry and indeed surveying, that should prove even more ridiculous.
Ah, but you see it is not the math that would be the issue.
... there is some movement in NASA to send high-quality observational telescopes to solar orbits far outside that of earth's.
These are the people that faked the lunar landings after all. What's a little added hoax of fake satellite data to that?
Probably filled with made up footage of "views" from the purported satellites that show things according to their false "secular materialistic" agenda, such as showing the earth orbiting the sun.

critical thinking and the evidence of reality
Hi xXGEARXx, welcome to the fray, if not already done.
There in lies the million dollar question. What is and what is not worth taking from the Bible?
We can start with eliminating any interpretation that is contradicted by the evidence of reality.
Consider these common impediments to a rational open-minded yet skeptical understanding of reality:
Confirmation Bias (Wikipedia, 2009)
In psychology and cognitive science, confirmation bias is a tendency to search for or interpret new information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions and avoids information and interpretations which contradict prior beliefs. It is a type of cognitive bias and represents an error of inductive inference, or as a form of selection bias toward confirmation of the hypothesis under study or disconfirmation of an alternative hypothesis.
Confirmation bias is of interest in the teaching of critical thinking, as the skill is misused if rigorous critical scrutiny is applied only to evidence challenging a preconceived idea but not to evidence supporting it.[1]
Cognitive dissonance(Wikipedia, 2009)
Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The "ideas" or "cognitions" in question may include attitudes and beliefs, and also the awareness of one's behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, or by justifying or rationalizing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.[1] Cognitive dissonance theory is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.
A powerful cause of dissonance is when an idea conflicts with a fundamental element of the self-concept, such as "I am a good person" or "I made the right decision." This can lead to rationalization when a person is presented with evidence of a bad choice. It can also lead to confirmation bias, the denial of disconfirming evidence, and other ego defense mechanisms.
ide fixe —n (American Heritage Dictionary, 2009)
A fixed idea; an obsession.
delusion -noun (American Heritage Dictionary 2009)
  1. a. The act or process of deluding.
    b. The state of being deluded.
  2. A false belief or opinion: labored under the delusion that success was at hand.
  3. Psychiatry A false belief strongly held in spite of invalidating evidence, especially as a symptom of mental illness: delusions of persecution.
Confirmation Bias, Cognitive Dissonance and ide fixes, are not the tools of an open-mind or an honest skeptic, and continued belief in the face of contradictory evidence is delusion. Critical thinking requires that one eliminate or reduce these impediments from one's world view as much as possible, or one ends up living in a world of fantasy.
As an example of an "interpretation that is contradicted by the evidence of reality" we have the geocentric earth hypothesis posited by some ancient christian believers. This concept has become so untenable that only a very small subset of christians hold such a belief.
Let someone try to convince you of scientology. You would think they were crazy. Which is why the older religions are easier to swallow for most people. The mass delusion has continued for so long that a lot of people take it as truth. It appears to me to be one heck of a slippery slope.
Another example of an "interpretation that is contradicted by the evidence of reality" is the young earth hypothesis posited by a small subset of christian believers.
The fact that this interpretation is not held by all christian believers shows that adherence to a belief in a young earth is not necessary to having a christian faith. It is going the way of the geocentric earth concept.
This thread points out one set of information contradicting a young earth hypothesis. There are several other threads that do the same, such as Age Correlations and An Old Earth, Version 2 No 1 and Are Uranium Halos the best evidence of (a) an old earth AND (b) constant physics?.
The fact is, there are literally mountains of evidence against a young earth, and that this evidence is so compelling and cross related that one needs to deny virtually all of science to maintain it. That is delusion.
Enjoy.

Re: Supernova 1987a -- and Cobalt decay
Hey Taq,
If you put [blockcolor=white] and [/blockcolor] around your gif you get:
which you then need to center if you want it there.
I have always pointed to supernova 1987a as evidence for the constant speed of light. ... If you want to calculate the DISTANCE to SN1987a then you have to put in speed for light. However, any speed of light you put in returns the same value for the number of years it would take for that light to reach you.
Yep, and one of the interesting things is what the light shows: radioactive decay that has the same brief half-life for come of the Cobalt isotopes that we see today.
So the decay rate has not changed in 168,000 years.
Enjoy.
