Re: genesis 1 vs 2 biblical inerrancy thread
quote:
Hi, AdminPD slapped down my question to icant about why the two genesis accounts apparently contradicting each other don't. My question was Message 239 and I'm not quite sure what was Off-Topic about it?
Is Message 240 also off-topic?
Ignore the title and read the OP and the Admin Message #236.
The originator states: This contradiction seems to debunk the inerrancy of the bible. This thread is to provide a place for debate as to whether or not it actually does.
The debate is about whether the contradictions presented by the originator debunks the inerrancy of the Bible. It is not about whether these are actually contradictions or not.
Message 240 is an attempt to get the thread back on track.
You came into the discussion after we all ran amuck.
Always remember, the title is not the argument; the OP presents the argument for debate.
PS: ICANT has his own thread concerning his views on Gen 1 and 2.
Creation as presented in Genesis chapters 1 and 2
The originator didn't want to go that direction as we can see in Message 8 of that thread.

Re: Get On Topic
From the thread's OP:
To me it has primarily been a reference source rather than a book that I have read for it’s narrative or wisdom or inspiration. So..
Given that I am neither seeking nor likely to be converted, given that I accept the historical importance of the bible to Western civilisation and can appreciate the worth of understanding it in that context - How would those who consider the bible to be a source of wisdom and inspiration suggest that I, as a non-believer, appreciate the more inspirational and timeless wisdom aspects of it?
Are there particular passages that I can be directed to as being of significant timeless wisdom and meaning? Are there particular parts that even a die hard atheist can point to as being inspirational and insightful?
If those with more biblical knowledge than I were to try and pinpoint the parts of the bible that they think stand out as significant regardless of ones belief which parts would they direct me to? And why?
The topic request isn't that difficult. If you want less tension, stay on topic.

Re: And it continues
Admin said it best:
Admin writes:
It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.
Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots. Message 150
Dawn Bertot is right. He came in with a compliment for Iano at Message 185 and was tackled even though he added nothing to the topic of the discussion. His post was off topic. You know his tendencies and you poked him anyway.
Who do you want suspended first?
If the person presents no position, then there isn't anything to address.
Dawn Bertot,
The Post of the Month is the appropriate place to give kudos for posts you find exemplary.

Re: And it continues
quote:
Please, if you would let the thread proceed, I would hate to see the discussion fall off due to a few of our side issues.
I don't feel it would be a good idea to reopen the thread for more reasons than just the bickering.
1. The originator never participated in the thread and since the topic was centered around what he could do, it left the thread open to drift.
JRTjr writes:
I propose to dedicate a string to whether or not I can, using scientific methods, definitions, and evidences, disprove ‘Macro-Evolution’ {Also known as ‘Darwinian Evolution’ or ‘Natural selection’}.
2. The person who complained because the topic wasn't promoted fast enough also hasn't participated in the thread.
3. As many times as you have been warned about personal attacks, you still openly insult people instead of dealing with their arguments. I don't feel I can trust you not to continue that practice in that thread. Although I feel you were unwisely goaded into participation in that thread, you are in control of what you write. When you get into that mode your posts are more bluster than substance. Keep your posts simple and to the point. Stick to the topic. Remember the delete key is our friend.
4. The others don't see their part in this issue, which is a shame.
Overall, I think a new thread needs to be started if people want to continue discussing Macro-Evolution.
Now another Admin can overrule me and open the thread, but right now I'm not inclined to reopen the thread.

Re: How off topic?
quote:
Why is my basically stating the same thing off-topic?
It's off topic when I say it as an Admin also, but it's part of my job. That's why I don't have people respond within the thread. You leave it open for people to respond in the thread and derail the thread.
To deter michaelrobin or anyone else from addressing your off topic comment of "Not much of a god then is it. Seems to be pretty limited.", which only serves to provoke; I marked yours as off topic. This usually stops people from responding in the thread and hopefully prevents derailment. Since you weren't suspended, what's the problem?

Re: Calling Speakers of English
I don't see a Moderation issue in that thread other than the discussion getting a little too personal at times.
If you're having difficulty understanding your opponent's position, I suggest you retire from the thread.
Thanks

Re: Calling Speakers of English
I don't see any misleading with the intent to deceive or be unfair. I see what seems to be more misunderstanding on your part than misleading on their part. I see that they have tried to correct what they feel is misunderstanding on your part.
I've noticed that sometimes you misconstrue an opponents position and are unwilling to adjust when corrected.
The thread is in the Coffee House, which is a place to take a break and participate in lighter discussion. Not so cut throat.
I don't see an infraction. If you don't like what they're saying, then stop conversing with them. I can't make them agree with you.
If you are unhappy with my lack of action, then take it to the Whine List.
Thanks
AdminPD

Re: Calling Speakers of English
Then don't play along. As I said before, if you don't like what they're saying, don't converse with them.
If you are unhappy with my lack of action, then take it to the Whine List. Our discussion is over. I see no enforceable infraction.
Do not continue discussing it in this thread.
Thanks

Re: For Percy
I closed the thread.
When many are off topic and posting short replies, it is difficult to get everyone's attention.
Closing the topic for a short period of time increases the odds that participants will see the warning and adjust accordingly.
Thanks
