Re: Not sure if actually Lee
yes me too. I hope you find something.
The point I am trying to make is that before you attribute a quote from someone you should know the original source. There are a lot of misattributed quotes on the internet and until I see the original source I am going to assume it is not Lee.

do what you will. almost no one on here links thier quotes to the original source, so I guess you do not believe any of them.
I will assume it is lee, as you have failed to disprove it.

When there is a quote that I am not sure about, I do a google search for that quote. In the case of the quote you posted, the google search does not turn up anything decisive.
If I were posting that quote, instead of using "Robert E Lee" as the source, I would have written "usually attributed to Robert E. Lee."

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
As you can see, AE can make up quotes all day. Mostly they can be found at racist blogger sites; he never knows any published or cited source for them.
But they usually feature Democrats or liberals supposedly saying things that would shock the liberal conscience.
That's good enough for him. And he just LOVES the opportunity to type "nigger"...then he can be called out for it and do his rant on how the REAL racists are those who call him out.
AE is internally consistent: it's only when he leaks into the real world that the cracks show.

Subbie seems to have done quite a good job.

"This war is about slavery" --- Robert E. Lee
Your turn to prove a negative.
"I'll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years." President Lyndon B. Johnson on the Civil Rights Act of 1964
"I will commit genocide to preserve the supremacy of the Aryan Race" --- Sarah Palin.
Whaddya mean "source"? It's on the internets. Well, it is now.

That's precisely the problem. It is very easy to make up quotes, and to get them all over the internet.
For a comparison, I did a google search on two alleged sayings:
  1. "There's a sucker born every minute" - usually attributed to PT Barnum, but probably not an actual quote;
  2. "This war is not about slavery" - said to be due to Robert E. Lee.
There's a wealth of links for the first of those sayings. There's a dearth of links for the second. That's certainly a hint that the Lee quote might have been made up rather recently, while the Barnum quote has been in the culture for a long time.

Re: Not sure if actually Lee
For a real bumper crop of made-up quotes, you have to turn to conservative/creationist sites' listings of Thomas Jefferson quotes.
They write new ones faster than the old ones can be debunked.
I think there's a little old Tea Party lady in Virginia who gets up every day, feeds her cats, and then sits down to write her TJ quote of the day.
The Lyndon Johnson chestnut that AE offered is a beaut. It was first reported in Newsmax journalist Robert Kessler's book, Inside the White House, where it was described as a comment made by LBJ to two governors aboard Air Force One.
That was 30-odd years before the book was written, so of course LBJ cannot defend himself: rule one of quote factories--Use dead people.
He also reported for Newsmax on then-Sen. Obama sitting silently while Rev. Wright denounced white arrogance.
From wiki:
quote:
In an article for Newsmax, on March 16, 2008, Kessler incorrectly reported, based on a previous Newsmax story by a freelance writer, that Senator Barack Obama attended a service at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ on July 22, 2007, during which Rev. Jeremiah Wright gave a sermon that blamed world suffering on "white arrogance."[22] The Obama campaign denied that Obama had attended the church on the day that sermon was delivered and other reporters discovered that Obama was in fact in transit to Miami, Florida on that day.[23]
Case closed? No, not at Newsmax:
Also from wiki:
quote:
Newsmax posted a "clarification" while standing by the story, suggesting that perhaps the sermon occurred on a different day in July.[22]
But Kessler is a major journalistic figure, right? He wouldn't go along with such shabby practices.
More from wiki:
quote:
Shortly after the controversy broke, Kessler confirmed to TPM that he attempted to remove information documenting it from his Wikipedia biography.[24]
Formula: Make it up, insist it could somehow be true when evidence shows it isn't, then try to change the historical record.
Amusingly, I find the purported quote usually ascribed to LBJ is sometimes attributed to FDR.
But, again, for truly awesome right-wing lie factory productivity, nobody beats the Jefferson lady.

Thanks. And very interesting comments.
I don't spend a lot of time at creationist or right wing extremist sites, so I hadn't noticed much of this.

Well there are a couple of reasons I question your quotes.
You are notorious for spurious quotes.
Also, I research all the quotes that are advocating a political viewpoint that are not sourced. Amazingly, they all have some basis in reality, except for yours.
Your Reagan quote is an actual quote, but you did misattribute it. It was not said by President Reagan, but rather by private citizen Ronald Reagan, before he was even Governor of California. It was a speech for the Goldwater campaign in 1964. A correct attribution would make it clear that it was not from Reagan while he was President. But I am sure you didn't know that at all.

Actual sourced Lee quote
quote:
The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence.

The most quoted man ever!
We can't have a quotes thread without including the man who is by far the most quoted person in the English speaking world. We have all quoted or paraphrased him many times without necessarily realising it. Here's a selection:
quote:
"This above all: to thine own self be true".
"Though this be madness, yet there is method in 't.".
"In my mind's eye".
"Brevity is the soul of wit".*
"Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind".
"I will speak daggers to her, but use none".
"When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions".
"All the world 's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts"**
"Can one desire too much of a good thing?"
"How bitter a thing it is to look into happiness through another man's eyes!"
"For ever and a day".
"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool"
"Now is the winter of our discontent".
"Off with his head!"
"An honest tale speeds best, being plainly told"
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet".
"Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast".
"Not stepping o'er the bounds of modesty".
"But love is blind, and lovers cannot see"
"If you prick us, do we not bleed?."
"The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose".
"Why, then the world 's mine oyster"
"This is the short and the long of it".
"I cannot tell what the dickens his name is".
"As good luck would have it".
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall".
"He will give the devil his due".
"The better part of valour is discretion".
"He hath eaten me out of house and home".
"The smallest worm will turn, being trodden on".
"Delays have dangerous ends".
"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". (Included for Subbie)
"Small things make base men proud".
"Having nothing, nothing can he lose".
"I 'll not budge an inch".
"We have seen better days".
"But, for my own part, it was Greek to me"
"A dish fit for the gods".
"Cry "Havoc," and let slip the dogs of war".
"Cowards die many times before their deaths"
"There 's daggers in men's smiles".
"I bear a charmed life".
"Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it; he died as one that had been studied in his death to throw away the dearest thing he owed, as 't were a careless trifle".
"Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
"How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child!"
"I am a man more sinned against than sinning".
"‘T’is neither here nor there."
"I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at".
"My salad days, when I was green in judgment."
"The game is up."
"I have not slept one wink.".
"Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them".
"Men of few words are the best men"
"The course of true love never did run smooth".
"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind".
"Everyone can master a grief but he that has it".
"Out of the jaws of death".
"To be, or not to be: that is the question".
There are lots of examples of famous quotes that play on Shakespeare's originals. Two I can think of for the above are these:
* "Brevity is the soul of lingerie" - Dorothy Parker
** "The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast." - Oscar Wilde

Your Heinlein quote of the day
It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so.
Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love, 1973

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.
