It seemed such a fine idea at the time. People electing their rulers.
But it didn't seem like 'such a fine idea at the time'. Many at the Convention hated the idea; the system we got for electing the President was a compromise, and a crappy one at that. Those original doubters were right, though; public input in such a decision allows for disastrous results. I don't think, however, Barack Obama exemplifies this; his predecessor certainly did, though.
