I think the best argument that something is greater than something else is which controls what. If my sense of duty to my country is greater than my love of self, than I will dive on that grenade. Something that motivates me, in other words, something that controls me, is categorically "greater than" me. Yeah?
So the claim at least, is that god does a great many things, wonderful and terrible things, for love. If god is working for love, love is his boss. No?
The usual theological cop-out here is to say that god
is love. In this case, of course, even getting nailed up for us becomes a purely
selfish act.
It's all pin-dancing though. The Great Cthulhu is "greater than" the Flying Spaghetti Monster; but the FSM is "more flying".
