To many people, every bad thing that happens is a "punishment from God." There's no need for very much thought to be put into it - did something bad happen? If yes, then it was a punishment from God. There you go. Natural explanations be damned.

Sadly the same is true for lots of good things too. I cant tell you how many times I heard somebody say that US Airways flight 1549, that went down into Hudson river, and nobody died, was a mirical....BS....The pilot did a good job, well the crew did a good job.
Exactly. God didn't get you a promotion, you did. God didn't save your life, that was the doctor that performed the appendectomy. God didn't save your house from a fire, that was the firefighters.
For some reason some people (at least some Christians, do other faiths do this too?) have a pathological need to attribute everything to their deity, effectively blaming teh victim for any bad occurrence, and removing the credit from people who actually deserve it.
It's the blaming the victim that gets me though. Nobody, no nation deserves an earthquake. They happen, and its tragic, but there is nothing you can do to deserve one. Rain falls on the just and the unjust alike, and claiming that bad things are punishments from God is just a way of saying "I don't need to feel bad for that person, they deserved it."
