The dems (= rich) also have nothing to lose from playing their games; they aren't a majority and needn't worry about taking blame for the fallout. What do they gain? They either get their way now or get to watch a lot of pugs go home in a couple of years and get double their way then.
Other than some feigned concern for the general welfare of the American people, there's no reason for either party to take this matter seriously.

I would almost lean towards original sin...after all, how do we get corrupt?
human nature seems to lean towards selfishness
thus all politicians are selfish and as you say, pansies who wont take a bullet for the team
the wealthy also appear to be selfish
and I have seen daily examples of selfish poor people as well.
