they revealed their shitty corporate side. Music is music, everybody has their own tastes. How can music be corporate? What does that even mean?

One of my all time favorites. I guess this is corporate too, whatever that means.

Friends who share my taste in jazz, blues, classical and rock assure me my aversion to opera reveals an uncultivated mind.
Alas. To clear my aural palate, I required a little nip of lust... ...and a little sip of defiance... "If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

How can music be corporate? What does that even mean? It has nothing to do with the music itself, it has to do with their protest of Napster. They came across as a bunch of corporate suits worried about music downloading from a financial POV. Somehow after that their music has failed DRASTICALLY in comparison to their original stuff. They lost their soul after that, and it is clear in the music they play now versus then. - Oni

Do you believe in copyright laws? Copying stuff and playing it when you could have paid for it is stealing. Now, if you copy music that has advertising you have to listen to before you hear it, that isn't stealing since the musicians get paid for the advertising. Other "I disappear" what other songs by Metallica after the black album were shitty? I know some people did not like the black album because it wasn't the same style of music as before. "nothing else matters" is another of my favorite songs that I believe is from the black album.

That's all fine to believe in and if you're a musician let your lawyers do what they have to do. But to say all of that you're saying (which I in some part agree with) as a metal band, in fact the BEST metal band of the time, makes them look like assholes. A bunch of long haired metal musicians complaining about copyright laws and how much money they'll loose is fucking weak.
Other "I disappear" what other songs by Metallica after the black album were shitty? ALL of it from Load, Re-load to St. Anger is horse shit. Granted, it's horse shit as compaired to albums like Ride the Lightning, Justice for All and Kill'em All. There is just no comparing the shit on Re-Load to any song on for example Ride the Lightning. It pisses me off to no end being a die-hard Metallica fan how horrible they sound now.
I know some people did not like the black album because it wasn't the same style of music as before. I've heard that too. And I get it. But I really liked the Black album. Enter Sandman is sick, Nothing Else Matters, Unforgiven, Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam...they're all pretty sick songs. - Oni Edited by onifre, : No reason given.

Now, if you copy music that has advertising you have to listen to before you hear it, that isn't stealing since the musicians get paid for the advertising. Amazing what excuses people make for the stuff they do. Copying stuff beyond what fair use or the law allows and without permission is copyright infringement. And generally speaking, musicians don't own the copyright to the stuff you hear, and they don't get paid one cent for advertising. This thread is about the music, nothing else . If you want to debate copyright BS then do it in another thread/topic.

I remember seeing an interview with Lars Ulrich where they were asking him about Napster.
Watching him complain about how much money he was losing while he was sitting by the pool of his Californian mansion seemed ironic at best. I'm sorry; I just don't get it. Musicians have a right to be paid for the music they produce if people are going to listen to it. If you are copying the music for yourself without paying for it and without the musicians getting advertising revenue, then you are stealing from the musicians. That seems pretty straightforward to me. Are you saying that listening to youtube recordings of music is stealing from the musicians?

Why does it matter if he was sitting by a pool at his california mansion?

Are you saying that listening to youtube recordings of music is stealing from the musicians? Simply listening to the music is not copyright infringement. But making copies of music and distributing copyright protected material without permission is copyright infringement. (Unless protected by fair use or other exception). You can read the law here if you care to. The overwhelming majority of stuff music on youtube was uploaded by regular folks without the copyright holder's permission. The uploading of entire songs, music videos, albums, and movies constituted infringement in the majority of those cases. Downloading that stuff to your hard drive also constitutes infringement in most cases. The advertisements on youtube benefit YouTube and Google and not the musicians or even their labels. Google is protected by the DMCA (Digital Millenium copyright act) from being liable for the music that users upload provided that they take the music down as soon as the copyright holder complains about it. At least that is the case under US law. I'm not going to tell you how to feel about your own activities with regards to copyright infringement. If you believe the law is unjust, or that you are sticking it to the man, or that copyright is simply corporate welfare, then that's what you believe. But I can point out what the law says. You don't seem to have that kind of slippery morals. So for you it might be important to know where the advertising money goes. It does not go to the copyright holder with the exception of those cases where the copyright holder has a deal with Google. In most cases, there is no deal. And no, I don't just play lawyer on the internet.Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison.
