Do any of you have any suggestions as to how we could reintroduce this discipline to an apathetic public? Yeah, good question. Because frankly, I just do not give a fuck about politics and I can't stand politicians. Just let me know when its time to grab our guns...

And the eighth-generation American Tea Party people have to take the exam, too? And Texas legislators? Didn't we all already take it in, like, 8th grade?

I think a refresher should be necessary in order to keep your ability to vote, hold office, and receive a tax break (or some other incentive, I just think like a conservative so less tax is always on my mind). Like retaking the driving test, or continuing education that is required of people in the medical field, a certification program whereby you show you are still worthy of US Citizenship. Like perditions says, I don't think failing the test should strip you of all of your rights of citizenship. But yeah, for things like voting and holding office I'm totally with you.

Any right-to-vote test is a moral abomination and has no place in a free democracy. Anyone thinking otherwise needs to get their head out of the clouds that are in their ass. A right-to-vote test can have a place in a free democracy. Anyone who proclaims that is impossible is a pompous ass.

But what I've said still stands. Stands as an unsupported assertion...
Your requirement that people demonstrate a certain standard of intelligence before being allowed to participate in their government has no place in a free democracy. Sure there is. For example, you have to be competent enough to vote in the first place. We're not going to wheelchair vegetables into the booth to push a random button. You're gonna hafta allow for a line to be drawn somewhere before we can discuss where it should be. But the absolute denial of a line anywhere is patently false.

We're not going to wheelchair vegetables into the booth to push a random button.
And that is our loss as a society. How?

And that is our loss as a society. Um, vegetables are unable to have a voice and pushing a random button isn't one.

But that still doesn't address the fact that as a voter, rather than a candidate, unless they do those things, and I am made aware of a meeting, there is no way for me to learn about a candidate's positions. uhh.... ask them???

And there is no legitimate reason for setting up any arbitrary standard of informed-ness other than to prevent people from voting who might vote in a way that displeases you. You could set the standard at "not totally uninformed" to make sure that people understand what they're actually voting for.

But in a free democracy, people have the right to vote for things they don't understand; even to cast random blind-chance votes in a language they cannot read or perhaps even speak. And that's stupid and undesireable. Nobody wants a free democracy. And even if they did, there'd still be limits on who is allowed to vote.

So what the fuck is Jon even talking about!?

I think he's hung up on the possibility of my quiz idea being used to bar people from voting, and doesn't like any system that reduces that chance of someone being able to vote. But why is he talking about a free democracy? I guess this is just another case of Jon being Jon. You're probably better off ignoring his nonsense.

And that's stupid and undesireable. Why? Casting random blind-chance votes in a language you cannot read does nothing to help democracy, free or otherwise. It totally pointless and would only inhibit any efforts towards progress for the country.
Nobody wants a free democracy.
I do. I doubt it... I believe that you think you do, but what you want isn't really a free democracy and what really is a free democracy isn't what you want. Unless you want to define what you're talking about as a "free democracy"?

Well, that's demonstrably untrue. What about Jon? He's doing what Jon does: Make an obscure, seemingly controversial, assertion and then back away from any challange with 'that's not what I'm talking about'. There's no such thing as a free democracy and nobody would want one anyways.
And even if they did, there'd still be limits on who is allowed to vote. Unless you're talking about the trivial cases of children and foreigners this is also not true. Yeah, and felons, and people who are mentally/physically unable to vote. So if its "everyone"... except for these and these and these and these, then its not really everyone.
