Congressman Broun sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
quote:
ATHENS, Ga. Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell" meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.
"God’s word is true," Broun said, according to a video posted on the church’s website. "I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."
Broun also said that he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days.

Re: Does he really believe that?
I have to wonder if the guy actually believes this or if he is just appealing to the majority of voters.
Representative Broun has no immediate need to appeal to voters. He is not facing any opposition from Democrats, and he won the Republican primary back in July. As someone has pointed out, Broun is an MD. Not many people would have bothered or had the knowledge to include a denunciation of embryology in their anti-evolution rant rant.
Most people probably think and hope that that the doctors they visit are scientists. When a fundy goes to the doctor for treatment instead of to Wednesday night Bible study, hasn't the fundy already made the call that he wants secular science to be applied to his condition?

Reflect the electorate
Some stats on how Democrats and Republicans view the theory of evolution
Republicans, Democrats Differ on Creationism
Sixty percent of Republicans are Creationists of the Broun strip.

Yes, he's tea party.
He's also Tea Party.
Yikes. You are right. Perhaps this wasn't news after all.

Re: Yes, he's tea party.
, he's on the Health Committee and Natural Resources.
I didn't know that. But from what I can read about him, he seems to exactly fit every bad generalization of a Tea Party member I've ever heard. Yes, besides being a creationist, Broun a birther, and a global climate change denier, and a hater of all things Muslim, equates Obama with Nazi's, wants to change the 14th amendment and thinks English is an endangered language, hates each of unions, the EPA, gays, and separation of church and state with a passion.
And here I am excoriating him for not believing in evolution, embryology and the big bang theory.

Re: Reflect the electorate
So based on that link, it appears that the more you go to church, the stupider you get.
Let's not confuse mere correlation with causation.

Representative Broun's beliefs may be wacky, but get back to me when he has actually done something that is demonstrably damaging to our country ok?
I have to agree with foreveryoung on this. Broun appears to be the single most ineffective member of Congress ever elected. None of his proposed bills ever get anywhere. No harm, no foul.

because he fails to believe in what all the "educated" people believe in.
Then Congressman is well beyond any "fails to believe". He says that evolution etc. are lies from the pit of hell designed to convince him he does not need a savior. In my view, that's tin foil hat level paranoia.

n contrast, Paul Broun made no attempt to temper the vitriol of his verbal attack against evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang Theory. His statement makes it clear that he's at least an evangelical and he explicitly identifies himself as a young-earther. While Reagan left some wiggle room about how strongly he actually believed what he had said, Broun leaves no doubt at all.
In order to become president, even Reagan had to appeal to some moderate non-evangelicals. True wing-nuts like Bachmann and Santorum, who are unwilling or unable to make such an appeal have no chance to be elected by the general electorate.
However, they do quite well within their local electorate. I'm not convinced that Broun's view would not be a net positive thing in a Georgia election.
That said, Broun is running uncontested. He has no real need to say anything right now.

Re: Forever hurls insults. Again.
His attack was against a group, rather than against persons. And the group was only vaguely specified with nobody explicitly listed as part of that group.
The group was "vaguely" specified as including every participant in this thread up to the time of his post other than himself. In other words, it is not vague at all. Perhaps that still isn't personal, but it is not vague.
I take it as an attempt to be personal, but given the clear inaccuracy of the insults, I take it as a failed attack.

Re: Mainstream Media? Really?
So what are the facts you are talking about?
Here is a fact for you. The earth is much older than 9,000 years old. There is plenty of evidence backing that up. In fact, I don't believe there to be a single poster to this thread, including you and foreveryoung, who believes otherwise.
Accordingly, the earth being older than 9,000 years old is not a lie from the pits of hell.

Re: Mainstream Media? Really?
The Bible gives evidence that the earth and heavens are much older than 9,000 years.
That's great. I am not describing a dispute between the Bible and science. My comments are about a Congressman who is an idiot.

Foreveryoung does not believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old. He doesn't accept that the earth is billions of years old, but he seems comfortable with the possibility that the earth is at least 1 million years old.
I have never seen him state a date for the flood.
