Re: Jumping Today - world record ballonn flight!
He broke 3 records, highest balloon flight, highest jump, fastest free fall, Joe K. still holds for the longest duration free fall. I am glad Joe still holds that one. I think he holds a couple other ballooning records also.

Bit of History
If Alex Baumgartner did break the sound barrier it will be on the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager's historic flight, very fitting and I hope he done it. (729 mph was the top speed I seen on the live feed)

Re: Bit of History
quote:
Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday Oct 14 after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,137 km jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

Felix will go down in history as being a first. I am sure Wilbur and Orville along with Yeager, Gagarin, Shepard, Glen, Armstrong and many others will happily admit him into such a prestigious club of hero's.
None of these people could have done what they did without the support of the un-seen men and women that make it all possible, kudos for all the people behind the scenes.

Re: Jumping Today - world record ballonn flight!
Joe K. still holds for the longest duration free fall.
Right before Felix's chute opened, the narrator mentioned Joe K's free fall record, Felix was 20+ seconds away from the record when he opened his chute. I'm guessing that the chute opened automatically at a certain altitude and that the attempt to break the speed record meant forgoing the free fall duration record.
The supersonic skydive was amazing. If I hadn't seen your link about twenty minutes before time to for Alex to leave the capsule I'd have missed the whole thing. Thanks!!
Edited by NoNukes, : Felix the Aussie, not Alex the fussy.

He was spinning pretty bad just before the chute opened. They had said that the shoot would automatically deploy during a spin if he went over a certain amount of G-force. I don't know if that's what happened or not, but that would be my guess.

I really enjoyed it. Hell, my stomach sank when he put he feet out and stood up, I can't imagine actually being up there.
And it was kind of funny how they kept screwing up the wind direction >.<
For all the crap companies get for marketing and advertising n'stuff, I'm happy to see Red Bull spending that kind of money on stuff that actually helps out.
Oh, and its a good demo on the power of the private sector too.

Scale of the jump
Just ran across this:
I have no idea of its accuracy, but some simple math makes it look about right.
Jump height = 120,000 feet
Diameter of Earth = ~42,000,000 feet.
That gives the height of the jump at just under 0.3% of the diameter.

Re: Scale of the jump
Ha, yeah...
Still though... it looked really-fucking-high from the camera on the capsule.
I guess it just goes to show how really-fucking-huge the planet is.
Gotta love NDT!

No, Felix managed to regain control of the spin himself, despite it being a very difficult task when encased in a pressure suit. But his visor was misting up to the point of being unable to see his instruments - in particular his altimeter. He deployed the chute because he could no longer be sure of how close he was to the target deployment height.

Hrm, I thought he was spinning again when the chute deployed. I remember him regaining control after spinning, and that image of him falling headfirst with his arms and legs dragging behind him was just iconic, but I thought he started spinning again just before the chute deployed. I may be misremembering. I'm gonna go look for a video.

Link to story with lots of Felix quotes.

Also lots of photos, links to videos, etc.

And also some comments from at least one person who says the whole thing was faked. I won't repeat them here.

The Daily Mail is a shitty bigoted hate-rag.
The comments are actually a better standard than normal.
