There are a lot of books written from a long time ago, and chances are that the people in those books are mostly racist. That doesn't make the books themselves racist.The book isn't racist just because it uses "racist" language (recall, that was common-place at the time, and to write the book any other way would be ignoring the clear racism of society). And then today, you would be looking back going "man, they talked so kindly of those funny little black slaves. didn't they realize how evil slavery was and racism? were they that oblivious? what schleps!"Basically, I think you will find a problem either way. And, I think it is that one thing that people like Subbie and I are really getting at.
