I tried to install 8 on a neighbour's Vista machine figuring it couldn't be worse, but the compatibility check told me that there was a problem with the network card and suggested that once installed I should go online to check the app store for an update. FFS.
24.99 for a Microsoft operating system - that's an interesting statement of intent (or admission of weakness.)

Re: Windows 8?
Watched the video--looks great for data and image access and manipulation, not so much for data input.
But I could see Jackson Pollock having a blast with it.

Re: Windows 8?
True. I guess, like Jon said earlier: interfaces like this don't quite lend themselves (yet) to data entry and actual computing.

For the Nerds

I'm here to tell you that gamers aren't touching this with a ten-foot pole. It's a 5-10% performance hit with no upside. We're sticking with Win 7 Ultimate, thank you very much.
(The following assumes everything is 64-bit versions)
Why Ultimate?
From my understanding, Win 7 Pro allows you to use over 16GB of RAM.
Win 7 Home limits you to 16GB of RAM, Win 7 Pro "limits" you to something like 196GB of RAM.
16GB of RAM even seems like a bunch... why not just stay with Win 7 Home (Premium)?
What does Ultimate allow you to do that is unavailable in Pro and is useful for gamers?
If anyone is interested, here are the basic prices as of today:
Win 7 Home - $105
Win 7 Pro - $150
Win 7 Ultimate - $190
(Canadian moneys)
Edited by Stile, : Got the prices wrong a bit. I'm blaming it on Christmas. Stupid good-for-nothing Christmas. Can't even get prices right. Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Ultimate has a bunch of the Enterprise features, like Virtual Disk booting, which occasionally come in handy, I guess. Mostly I just think gamers like stuff that says "Ultimate" on it.
As it turned out, I bit the bullet and installed Win 8 as well, and I find I kind of like it - I like the Start Screen more than I ever liked the Start Menu, Win 8 has better features for multi-monitor use (I have 3), and I've not noticed whatever framerate hit others have been seeing. Combined with Win 8's UEFI boot and my SSD, it boots up super-fast. But the installation was not without its hiccups. The seamless upgrade didn't work at all; I had to install to a clean drive, as it turned out.
