Re: guns versus mentality
I happen to own quite a few guns, yet I have not used them in a violent manner.
I am always armed, yet I have never hard to use a gun in a violent manner.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Re: guns versus mentality
jar's reply was not in favor of guns but rather a recognition of reality.
My guns do not pose a risk to anyone and in fact might someday provide safety to others.

HUH?
Are you saying that you would like for my guns to be a threat to others?

Simple answers are almost always wrong
Simple answers are almost always wrong and seldom work as expected.
There are some real problems in the US, a lousy health care system, almost non-existent mental health system, an increasing gap between poor and rich, dynamic changes in what jobs are available and a for shit education system, almost non-existent news distribution and education, a large percentage of the population that are totally out of touch with reality and a large percentage of the population that think only in bumper sticker sized bites.
We do need change but what is needed is a whole cultural makeover.

No, I may not have needed to be armed but that does not imply that I will not need to be armed.

No, they are not the only cause of violence in the US, in fact most of those are only symptomatic of how totally fucked up the US is these days.
When I was young and growing up everyone I knew in the city, the suburbs, the country had guns. A family room or den without a gun rack or cabinet with ammo, rifles, shotguns and pistols seemed empty, like something was missing. A pickup without a gun rack with at least a "Dirty-Thirty" or shotgun and the windows down, door unlocked parked by the curb would have looked naked. A boy or girl at school without a knife would be laughable.
Well, since then the guns haven't changed much. Since then the knives haven't changed much. The people though have changed. The problem is not guns, not knives, it's people.

The original intent of the Second Amendment is irrelevant.
The original intent of folk that died over 200 years ago is totally irrelevant in this case. What is relevant is that they were smart enough to know that what might be appropriate in the 18th Century might not be appropriate in the 21st Century so they built in ways to change the Constitution.

Re: And so the pendulum swings again.
That prevents the effective use of the gun for home defense. You shouldn't have to fumble around with a safe while someone's breaking into your house.
So you could have an exception for one personal defense gun.

Re: And so the pendulum swings again.
Actually one of my rifles has both a grenade launcher and a bayonet and under US law I must leave both on the weapon. It has a 10 round magazine and is semi-automatic.

That's fine. I don't mind your confusion. If you would like I'd be happy to try to explain sometime although it will be a rather boring discussion I fear.
