a test for honesty.
Well, here is another relatively simple test the "Creation Scientists" could perform. All that is need are three herds of goats and a few tree branches.
You got the order somewhat wrong though in your explanation. The speckled, striped and spotted goats and the dark colored lambs were to become Jacobs.
But it is an interesting passage since it shows Jacob conning Laban and becoming rich through the con job.
The prior passage is also interesting. Real wives of Paddan Aram or what can you buy with a mandrake.

Making stuff up.
No Jacob is not. It's just either to help them mate or help them be born stronger. Worse case scenario we're talking about Jacob not knowing it will not help. It does not state god told him to do it. This does not hurt literalist's at all.
Sorry but that is simply lying about what the Bible says.
No where in the story does it say anything about Jacob making or wanting to make anything stronger but it does lay out in detail what the agreement was and that Jacob became rich based on the tactic.
Of course it also shows the Bible is literally false at least in that passage.

Re: Making stuff up.
Jacob had NO flock and his job was taking care of Laban's flock. His payment was to be the streaked, spotted and striped goats and the dark lambs.
It is pretty clear in ALL the various translations and versions exactly what is happening; Jacob is maximizing his payment by increasing the incidence of streaked, striped and spotted goats and dark lambs.
But the important point is that in the story his trick with the branches works.
That is factually wrong.

Re: a test for honesty.
Even if that were true I don't see how that makes anything justified but I do think that is likely the point of the story. If you read the passages before the goat story you similar patterns.
These were fireside stories and fables and stories about getting even were common.

The idea of abiogenesis is completely logical to many if not most theists as well.

Believing in religion has nothing to do with understanding science.
Free thought is just cheap thought anyway.

Re: contradiction
It is important to remember in all the fireside Jacob tales that conning, cheating and getting even shows up. There are examples among the wives, between Laban and Jacob, between Jacob and his father and brothers, even between Jacob and God.
In Genesis 32:22-32 God tries to wrestle with Jacob and beat him but fails. The God character finally pushes a nerve on Jacobs hip to wrench Jacobs hip but Jacob still doesn't give up and so God has to cry Uncle.
But all that is irrelevant to the topic and the topic clearly claims that making goats face branches and bark while breeding will determine whether they are striped, spotted or streaked.
That's utter nonsense but great material for a story teller, a fireside fable and written just like the old Saturday Serials. The continuing saga of Jacob meant that the story teller got fed and sheltered for the night and he'd spin out the next chapter for his meal then next night.

Re: I may have been completely wrong
Remember the God character in the Jacob stories is also a trickster and a bully. The stories are about the founding of the tribe and people "Israel" and so mythos.
