I think the dungeons might be cross-server though. That is, even though we're not on the same server, we might be able to run a dungeon together.
I think so too. Or, maybe there are some privacy settings?
We've played a few dungeons now.
Met a cool guy and tried to friend him after the dungeon but the game said "cannot find character" or "does not exist" or something like that. I'm guess he just didn't exist on that server but the crossing aspect of dungeons matched us up. We were able to find his character on Lodestone.
The story:
Me (as my wife's character) and a guy I know from work were doing a 4-person dungeon... Copperbell Mines.
Everything clicked and we started up.
Our tank left immediately, though (not sure if voluntarily or not.. but he was just gone as soon as the instance started).
We sat waiting for another tank for a bit, then decided to see if we could clear some of the mobs while waiting for one (Me -> Conjurer, Work Guy -> Arcanist, Other DPS Guy -> Lancer, I think). Work Guy dropped Topaz Carbuncle and I ended up healing Topaz C. as the tank.
We just kept going and made it through 3/4 of the dungeon.
Then, finally, the game dumped another tank in for us.
Well... Work Guy sent out a request to kick him! We figured we had made it this far and decided to agree... so we dropped our tank (sorry whoever-you-were...) and cancelled the server request to find any more.
Other DPS Guy just stared at us for a minute... then kept going along too.
We ended up clearing the whole thing and finishing it without ever using a tank
Same not-existing-thing with another person. This time the experience was unfortunately a bit shitty (not to us... some girl was ragging on a noob tank). We wanted to block her after the dungeon, but again got the "does not exist/cannot find character" issue.
All in all, we've been having a great time and I think we'll stick with it for a long while.
Wife's ecstatic about getting a Chocobo... she loves birds in all their forms!
Let me know when you get there, I got that Black Mage DPS for ya!
Will do. Probably going to be about 6 weeks or so, though. Have to wait at least one month until I can get my own character going, then will try to learn the game for a little bit...

I'm not sure, but yeah, the dungeons are cross-server. Which is nice, because then the pool of players to pull from is much larger and you won't have to wait as long for a dungeon.
Work Guy dropped Topaz Carbuncle and I ended up healing Topaz C. as the tank.
Nice! The carbuncle does do well as a tank.
Sometime when you're queued up for the dungeon, and you don't have a tank or a healer, then it takes a while to find one.
When you and your wife are playing the tank/healer combo, you'll pretty much get instant queues for dungeons. DPS characters are a dime a dozen, and you always end up waiting for a tank or a healer.
The XP is pretty good in the dungeons. And it beats running fates back to back.
Wife's ecstatic about getting a Chocobo... she loves birds in all their forms!
And the time savings from the speed of a mount are awesome. You'll wonder how you ever played the game without one.
Too, you can do a quest where you can convert your chocobo in a battle form. Then they can fight alongside you and even do some tanking for you. But I don't think you can pull them into a dungeon.

Mini update
Not really a "battle" that anyone seems overly concerned with anymore. The interwebs has moved on to bigger and better things. Or... at least other things. Stupid internet users.
But, PS4 is still winning the war:
The Winner In The War Between Xbox One, PS4 And Wii U Is... Everyone
quote:
Sony on Thursday announced it has cumulatively sold more than 7 million units of its Playstation 4 console. Meanwhile, Microsoft has reported no real sales figures for Xbox One, but has announced 5 million units shipped to retailers since the console launched.
The italics is mine... because I like to rub Microsoft's nose in the dirty, dirty ground.
And now for some anecdotal trifling:
I have recently purchased a PS4.
In Canada, the PS4 was sold out for a long time. Then, they decided to raise the price from $400 to $450. Then it became available again.
So... the wife and I took a weekend trip to Chicago to see her family where we purchased a PS4 of our own for the normal price of $400.
Take that, corporate big wigs!!!
The only game on the PS4 I've played to this date is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It's a MMORPG... which means it sucks up all your time and drains your life energy while making you squeal at pixels dancing across your television. Just like mom used to make!
We currently have a two-TV system going in our living room
One TV hooked to the PS4, and another hooked to our old PS3.
This way my wife and I can both play FF14 together, at the same time, while snuggling on the couch like that couple that everybody hates.
This gave us an excellent opportunity to compare the PS3 and the PS4 (for FF14, anyway).
Graphics are way better on the PS4. I think the MMORPG aspect of the game takes up a bunch of processing power... so the PS3 graphics are turned way down, but this isn't necessary on the PS4 and everything is in sharp, crisp HD quality vision. I could tell the difference even without them being side-by-side for this game.
Loading screens are much faster on the PS4. The PS4 consistently enters a dungeon (instance) or even just next-area-screen 5-8 seconds faster than the PS3.
Controller is larger. This is just nicer for my manly man hands. My wife actually prefers the PS3 controller.
So, yeah... PS4 is pretty cool.

Console Electoral Map
Typical. Florida is STILL a swing state.
Here is the Forbes article in case anyone is interested:

DDoS Attack on Sony!
The consoles continue to sell in vast numbers.
Millions sold by Microsoft.
A few more millions sold by Sony.
Sure, it looks like Sony won so far... but it's not exactly like Microsoft lost.
Sony didn't so much 'take the gold in the 100m dash over Microsoft' as they did... um... 'park a Maserati in their driveway beside Microsoft's Lexus.'
...yay for horrible analogies!
Anyway, this post is to vent my frustrations over this last weekend. I spent all Saturday cleaning the house, fixing up the backyard, moving cinder blocks around and picking up my mother-in-law from the airport. All I wanted to do on Sunday was sit down, relax, and play some video games.
Unfortunately, I couldn't play the one game I wanted to play (FF14 Online).
Sony's network (PSN = PlayStation Network) was under a DDoS attack.
This is a Distributed Denial of Service attack. Which basically means that some guys setup a bunch of hardware to request a bunch of (seemingly legitimate) data through Sony's network so that it shuts down due to being overloaded.
Microsoft's similar system (Xbox Live) was apparently also attacked, but their interruption in service was either non-existent or minimal.
Why Microsoft's system was hardly down at all and Sony's was down all day:
-no one is on Microsoft's system anyway, therefore an increase in traffic didn't clog anything.
-Microsoft's system did go down for the day, it's just that nobody noticed
-Microsoft actually does have a better security team to deal with such things
-who cares?

Depends on what you mean by "better". You can go into a McDonalds anywhere in the world and know what to expect. I personally have no idea what a "PF Chang" is.
Maybe a Glerkenheimer game console is infinitely better quality than any other - but how would you know?

Sure, it looks like Sony won so far... but it's not exactly like Microsoft lost.
Microsoft is estimated to lose between 1-3 billion dollars a year selling XBox. Perhaps losing is really winning.

Really? What's the plan, then?
Eventual market-share-monopoly-thing?
Just having their name out in gaming so that they appeal to that market but gear back to PC sales?
I mean... there has to be a plan.
Nobody runs a business that just loses money. Well, at least Microsoft isn't that dumb, anyway.
