Hummingbirds in the snow
This morning it is 25F and snowing, with about 3 inches on the ground so far.

We have been keeping 4-5 overwintering Anna's Hummingbirds going. The temps have been down in the teens this week so we bring the feeders in at night. We have 3 feeders that are out of sight of each other, so one so cannot dominate them all.

More Snow
We are having more snow days here. It has been hovering at about 20-22 F since Wednesday and we got about 10 inches of snow yesterday and another 6 inches expected today.

We still have 3 hummingbirds coming to the feeders (actually hanging out right next to the feeders). They get all freaked out when I bring each feeder in every couple hours to nuke em to thaw the ice.

Last winter we didn't get a single flake and barely got below freezing.

Re: More Snow
This was early yesterday morning.

There is about 4 times more snow now and snowing hard.

We get a mob of Bushtits that come all at once for the suet and Chickadees, Nuthatches, Juncos, Towees, Townsend's Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Scrub Jays, Goldfinches and Lesser Goldfinches, House Finches, and a bunch of others that I have not ID'd yet.

I grew up east of the Cascades and we were below 0F a lot, but it is rarer to get so cold here in the Willamette Valley.

Re: More Snow
I guess I would get tired of those kinds of winters, but I do love snow.

My best friend lives in WI...have not heard from him in a couple weeks.....should give him a call.

Re: More Snow
Hey, I'm not complaining.

They are predicting freezing rain at the end of this storm so we could end up without power, too.

I enjoy uncommon weather. Some even call me the Weather Rebel.

Re: About half way through spring...
You guys get some brutal winter weather there. My best friend lives in Wautoma and that's the only part he dislikes, winter. They have some awesome dragonflies when it does warm up.

We had our hottest day today and I saw 3 species of dragonflies at my pond. The last couple weeks have been an extraordinary stretch of dry warm days here.

Re: About half way through spring...
We feed about a dozen Anna's hummingbirds through the winter here. On nights when it's going to get below freezing the feeders are inside to keep them from freezing. Sometimes on really cold days we bring them inside and nuke them to keep them liquid.

They all used to migrate in the fall but about 30 years ago people stated noticing a few overwintering. Since then there have been more and more.

Re: About half way through spring...
Both are happening, but normally people put their feeders away in the fall until they noticed that hummers were sticking around longer.

My first experience was on December 21, but I don't remember the year, sometime in the '90s. I was working at my computer next to the door to the patio. A movement in the corner of my eye caught my attention. It was a hummer trying to feed at an empty feeder. It was a freezing fog morning with the temp at 21 degrees F.

I mixed up some sugar water and have been feeding them year round ever since.

Thunder and Lightning
i'm having a tremendous lightning storm here, which is a rarity. I just finished mowing the lawn an hour ago. Weather Bug, an app on my phone says the nearest strike was 1.7 miles away. I have only seen one flash but hearing lots of thunder. I love the sounds of a storm like this.

Of course, my lightning trigger for my camera is at home...crap!

Re: Thunder and Lightning
It is extremely rare to have these types of downpours in our area.

It is pretty rare to have that intensity here too. The water was pouring right over the top of my rain gutters.

Re: 108 in France today
So the high here today in Central Texas was a balmy 92 degrees which by Texas standards is pleasant.

I was in Texas last week and part of the week before and the heat and humidity felt like hell. The dragonfly hunting was great though and I got photos of the female of a species that I have long wanted to see and photograph.

Re: 108 in France today
Photos? Where?

Sorry, I haven't processed them yet.

We collected eggs from a number of species and I am spending all my time shooting stacks documenting the embryo development. I set up my computer to automate a sequence of processing steps overnight, but right now I am generating more images per day than I can get processed per day. I have to record events as they happen and there is no chance for a do over.
