Re: Let's limit this discussion to the specifics
Specifically, if a business owner is open to the public marketplace, then there are certain rules to participate. Just because a business is privately owned doesn't mean they can discriminate against certain customers.
Some states protect gays & lesbians as a class, but Arizona does not. So, even though this bill was vetoed, there's still the question of businesses refusing to serve them, or hire them. Sounds to me like they still can.
The last refuge during the civil rights era for racists was the 'religion' card, just as it is the last refuge today for those bigots who would like to discriminate against gays. That's the parallel, Faith.

Re: Let's limit this discussion to the specifics
So what's going to happen is that people with a strong moral conviction against gay marriage are going to give up their businesses and go to prison.
No, that's just stuff you're making up in your head without even reading the language of the bill. There's no jail, or prison, or loss of business. Why do you do that?
And no, Faith, we don't hate you for being a bigot. We would prefer you keep it to yourself in public, but you are free to rant as you will. As we are free to criticize you for speaking that way publically. Criticism isn't hate.

CS, have you met Mr. Rand Paul?
"Paul told Maddow that he agrees with most parts of the Civil Rights Act, except for one (Title II), that made it a crime for private businesses to discriminate against customers on the basis of race. Paul explained that had he been in office during debate of bill, he would have tried to change the legislation. He said that it stifled first amendment rights"

He also thought that bad publicity would force these businesses to close. Didn't really work out that way, did it?

Re: Let's limit this discussion to the specifics
Those of us who believe the Bible is the inspired inerrant word of God will choose to die rather than be forced to do something that violates it. Apparently that's all right with you. Welcome to the USSA.
Are you insinuating that Christians will be executed for something like this? Such drama!!
Really, Faith, tone it down. My advice to you & other Christians so morally opposed to violating your interpretation of the bible - don't open a business in the public marketplace. Easy.
You understand that you can still be a bigot, but in private, right? Private organizations discriminate against groups of people all the time.

Re: Let's limit this discussion to the specifics
I'm SO sorry, but it's those who are opposed to Christian business owners refusing service for Christian reasons who are the bigots. Right, don't open a business, right. How very very tolerant of you.
No need to apologize, and you seem to be ignoring the public/private part of this discussion. Or do you not see a difference?

Do we forget that Jesus associated with, ate with, preached and taught to the social outcasts
And he really didn't have much to say about homosexuality, either.
Reportedly.

Re: There are Christians who disagree with Faith
Far as I know all I'm condoning is the right to conscientiously refuse to do anything that is felt to support gay marriage.
Then don't set up a business in the public marketplace. Keep to private clubs, organizations, and the like. This is the core of the issue, Faith. Believe what you want, support whom you want, but keep it private.
Once you enter into the public, you have rules to participate in that public place.

Re: There are Christians who disagree with Faith
So, you want folks to be able to run a business any way they want? No regulations, no laws restricting business practices, is that it?

One person's 'personal conscience' is this country's bigotry. 'Public accomodation' was settled with our civil rights legislation 50 years ago. I'm surprised you're not well versed in American history, proud patriot that you are.
