Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
Also, don't tell Microsoft, but I'm retired now, so I'm no longer entitled to the Microsoft Office suite that employment at my former company qualified me for. Moving the license to a new install would be detected. Next time I upgrade the OS or purchase a new computer I'll have to pay for a Microsoft Office license.
Look into LibreOffice (used to be OpenOffice) freeware. They also have beginning cad and project management software.
Curiously I have an old version of AutoCad (fully licensed but haven't paid for updates) and it won't run on Windoze 7 or higher (so I need XP alt boost to use): I got it when new owner drove the company I was working for into the dirt and fired the design staff -- they had no idea of the value of the software and were going to throw it away. They are now bankrupted history.
But I need a new laptop, and I would like Ubuntu 14 (trusty tapir) as the primary\sole OS, and that means seeing if I can Wine and dine Autocad to work on a virtual OS window ... (and I would like to use touch screen). Then maybe I can let XP go.
Enjoy

open source office suite programs
OpenOffice is still there; I just downloaded their most recent version the other day. It looks more like LibreOffice is a separate package built from OpenOffice source.
I'm gonna have to download it and see what it's all about.
Yes the original was Open Office, and it split into Libre Office and Apache Open Office according to my sources.
My experience is that LibreOffice is very close to the older OpenOffice, but I don't know what the other version is like.
It does word documents, spreadsheets, slide shows, draw and all can be saved in microsoft formats just as all microsoft documents can be openned and used in Libre\Open Office programs.
The Open Office Suite used to be bundled in Ubuntu, and now the Libre Office Suite is bundled in the new versions.
I'd like a more robust cad program (hot key shortcuts to commands) from them, and I'd like a more robust project manager program, but I can get by with what I have on those.
Let me know if you think the Apache OO Suite is better?
Enjoy

Re: open source office suite programs
... There was something I was trying to do with OO a couple of years back that I found to be a pain in the ass compared to Word, ...
Haven't tried Libre yet, but one of the areas in OO that I had some difficulty with was doing "track changes" on legal documents under negotiations, so that you could see who modified what in the documents. OO could do it but finding the formating commands was not as user friendly.
Downloading Libre now; I'll let you know my first impressions. But, I will tell you this: Apache's was about 130 MB and Libre is 214; so there's a difference right there.
Hopefully that translates into usable functionality.
Thanks

Re: open source office suite programs
Remember that excel formula you helped me with a while ago? Well, I loaded that document into both of these programs and I liked Libre better here too. ...
I do, and that is one place where MS is better because in Libre you have to manually insert the $ signs. The way they move and copy cells is also a little different.
Based on these little things, I think I'd use Libre over Apache. But I still can't get over them both lacking the asterisks for footnotes... it's so strange.
Curiously I went to insert footnote and chose the "character option" and entered "*" and it worked fine?

Re: open source office suite programs
I haven't used VB
he help says this about VBA
quote:
Load Basic code
Loads and saves the Basic code from a Microsoft document as a special LibreOffice Basic module with the document. The disabled Microsoft Basic code is visible in the LibreOffice Basic IDE between Sub and End Sub. You can edit the code. When saving the document in LibreOffice format, the Basic code is saved as well. When saving in another format, the Basic code from the LibreOffice Basic IDE is not saved.
Save original Basic code
Specifies that the original Microsoft Basic code contained in the document is held in a special internal memory for as long as the document remains loaded in LibreOffice. When saving the document in Microsoft format the Microsoft Basic is saved again with the code in an unchanged form.
When saving in another format than Microsoft Format, the Microsoft Basic Code is not saved. For example, if the document contains Microsoft Basic Code and you save it in LibreOffice format, you will be warned that the Microsoft Basic Code will not be saved.
The Save original Basic code checkbox takes precedence over the Load Basic code check box. If both boxes are marked and you edit the disabled Basic Code in the LibreOffice Basic IDE, the original Microsoft Basic code will be saved when saving in the Microsoft format. A message appears to inform you of this.
To remove any possible Microsoft Basic macro viruses from the Microsoft document, unmark the Save Original Basic Code check box and save the document in Microsoft format. The document will be saved without the Microsoft Basic code.
You'd have to try it to see.
Let me know if you do?
Thanks

Re: open source office suite programs
I do, and that is one place where MS is better because in Libre you have to manually insert the $ signs.
Maybe your version is older than mine, but I can enter -50 in a cell formatted for currency, and it will automatically switch to ($50.00).
Sorry, I was not clear: I was referring to absolute as compared to relative references. In a cell formula you can use "D3" but when you copy it two cells over and one down it will reference "F4" but if you used "D$3" it will reference "F$3" and if you used "$D3" it will reference "$D4" and finally if you used "$D$3" it will reference "$D$3" -- in ms you could tab through these options quickly.
I have now found the same functionality in Libre using shift+F4 -- thanks for making me look.

Re: strongest force in the universe
The probability of cord entanglement goes up exponentially with the number of cords in a closed space, but they exist in both a tangled and an untangled state which doesn't change until you try to move one of them, at which point entanglement occurs affecting all the cords.
And of cords if you're also playing chords it's not in the cards to reach the enlightened state of disentanglement.

Why is a, the area, given in units of volume?
Actually it should be space rather than area, which of course is multidimensional as we are dealing with string theory derivations.

Re: Internet / phone problem
If others come along and agree with you I'll make the supreme effort to squish myself into position to remove the cord. But I'm going to wait to find out, because what everyone else is saying is what I was worried might be the case: that I do need a connection to the wall.
As an alternate solution, find the other end of the cord that is plugged into the wall and unplug it from that other end, then you can leave the cable behind the bookcase if it is not needed. That should save you some energy and distress.
If that is your phone, then the tech must have told you to plug it into a different socket (on the modem or a splitter) -- and imho should have done that for you with a new cable. If this is the case then I would call him back and insist he finish the job he started. At no cost.
Enjoy

Re: Internet / phone problem
I finally turned my desk around so my back is to the wall and the cords are in the middle of the room where I can get at them easily. It's better feng shui too.
Wireless modem at the top of the cellar stairs. WiFi touch-screen laptop can be used anywhere in house or folded up and put away out of sight.
That's kung fu feng shui

Re: I Think I Got This
Light dawns on Marblehead ...
... It's something called U Verse that AT&T does. ...
This is a "triple-play" service -- broadband internet plus TV plus (wait for it) phone through the internet cable ... and that's why you need to plug your phone into it.
U-verse TV - Wikipedia
... and that also explains why he would be outside -- working on the pole to reroute your phone into the connection, leaving your phone jacks dead (ain't progress wonnaful?) ...
And again I say he should have given you a new phone cable and plugged you in and tested it to make sure it worked properly. This kind of neglect makes me mad, it is so pervasive in our "service" providers.
Enjoy

Re: Phone issues
Google cell phone for seniors
There are services that provide simple cell phones with large numbers and that do not require a contract to operate. The best deal for emergency use would be one pre-loaded with minutes and no monthly bill -- you just buy minutes when you need to top it up.
here's a brief overview The best cell phones for seniors and the elderly - updated June 2022 - PhoneArena
The all-new easy to use Jitterbug Flip2 is our best simple senior flip phone. Enjoy added security with 24/7 one-touch access to safety experts. is a fairly cheap service, $99 for phone + $15/month and it has link lines to medical service and alerts.
Snapfn Cell Phones & Wireless Plans is another the is free phone and $10/month with a panic button to call help.
Good luck

Bought a new touch screen laptop that had windoze 8.1 on it. Just as I got used to that it hijacked my machine and upgraded me to 10.
Now it isn't a touch screen laptop. Microsucks strikes again.
Time to install linux.
