Windows 8 and 8.1 are the worst viruses unleashed on the planet.
When DrA wrote: "I am running Windows 8.1, it is fucked," I did consider replying "Yes, that's the way it comes from the factory." But I decided this was not the time to inject humor.
They have disabled to alternate boot option so you can only reboot Windows 8 off your hard drive.
I'm not quite sure what that means. I'm posting this from opensuse 13.2, which is what I mostly use on my Win8/Win8.1 box. I have not had any serious problems with dual-booting.
What is Panda?
Probably this Anti-virus software.

"While Clark didn't mention it, booting to a Linux operating system on a Windows 8 machine appears to be a whole different kettle of fish that's associated with a UEFI "secure boot" controversy.
That's bogus. Some of the newer hardware does cause problems for linux, but that is not due to Windows 8, and it is not due to secure-boot. In most cases, it is due to poor implementations of the UEFI specifications. In a few cases, it is because the hardware uses 32-bit UEFI (mostly with Intel Atom processors), and the linux world hasn't done much for those systems.

I'd love to know how you did that
Many UEFI systems have a key that you can use to get into the BIOS boot settings. It is often F12, but on HP systems it might be F9.
On both of my UEFI boxes, I pound away on F12 while booting. On one of the two boxes, hitting F12 once or twice after the logo appears is enough. On the other (a Dell), I have to start pounding the key before the logo appears, and keep hitting it. Occasionally I miss, and it goes into Windows. But, 90% of the time that brings up a boot menu where I can select booting from a USB.

Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
It looks more like LibreOffice is a separate package built from OpenOffice source.
The technical term is "fork".
The Open Office project was forked maybe 3 years ago, and most linux distros have been going with the Libre Office branch of that fork. I've forgotten (or maybe I never knew) what was the disagreement that led to a fork.
Come to think of it (this is "evcforum"), what we have here is common descent with change.

Re: In Defense of Us Luddites
It comes down to Sun owning OpenOffice and Oracle buying out Sun.
If it is open source, then one doesn't own it.
More correct would be that Sun owned "Star Office", and they opened up what they could give away (not licensed from anyone else) for "Open Office".

Advice?
Linux.
I don't get any Win10 popups. I don't get any on my Vista system, either.
Also I've been getting calls from people with Indian accents claiming to be from Microsoft or Windows.
I laugh to myself, and hangup. It's easier for a linux user to recognize that this is a scam.
