Having foolishly jumped from Win 7 to 10 I'm interested in others experience.
So far:
It shuts down appreciably faster (I'd say half the time).
It seems to be slower everywhere else, most annoyingly in responses to simple mouse clicks.
I don't like the interface much but it is a big improvement over win 8. I'm still saddled with the real estate costs of a touch interface when I don't have a touch screen.
The conversion was over 90% clean but I have still had to fiddle with things and reinstall some "apps".

I hope to move to Windows 10 when it is relatively painless and I can see advantages for me in some of the features. For me, to move a new Windows OS is usually a one to two week full time process involving:
  • Reinstalling everything, like Apache, MySQL, PHP, CygWin (Linux emulator), etc.
  • Moving data, like Outlook mailboxes, MySQL databases, etc.
  • Finding ways to make the new OS behave in the way I like. A couple simple examples are swapping caps/ctrl-lock and X-Mouse behavior.
I've heard that reinstalling all your applications may no longer be a requirement with Windows 10, which possibly means I may not have to move all my data, either, which would be an incredible boon given past experience. The moves from Windows 95 to Windows XP, and then from Windows XP to Windows 7, were both excruciatingly painful.
I'm currently on Windows 7.

I've been involved with about 16 upgrades from 7 or 8.1. All of them have run faster overall except my son's HP laptop, and that was fixed by removing some programs from Startup. (msconfig.exe).
Tip: if you hate This PC opening to Quick Access, in This PC (Windows Explorer) with the ribbon showing on the View tab, click the Options button, not the little down-arrow below it. At the top will be a drop-down for the initial view.
Sure wish someone would figure out how to make Settings | Apps and Features default to sorting by name instead of by size, or remembering the last choice.

It's pretty darned good about existing applications. Be aware that if you download the Media Creation Tool and run it, "Update Now" is not exactly the same as "Create ISO" followed by burning a DVD. The former checks for incompatible apps and drivers and warns you, installing from the ISO does not. Had a lot of problems with some of the computers until we figured that out. Spend the time to download from the Media Creation Tool.

I move to a new operating system when my computer dies and I buy another used one (whatever OS it has). I re-download and re-install any software that I'm still using, which is about the only updating I do. Any important data is backed up on an external hard drive.
I currently use Windows 7 at the library and Windows 98, XP and Vista at home. I also have a Vic-20 that runs.

I'm still sitting comfortably on Windows 7. I never did consider Windows 8, especially after all the negative response it received from consumers.
Regarding Windows 10, I see no reason to upgrade anytime soon. My current system hums along nicely and I don't have any dependencies that require me to upgrade to a new operating system. Considering MSFT's track record on releases, I would prefer to bide my time and wait for all the kinks to be worked out before I decide to jump in.

I have upgraded 6 computers to Win 10. No issues on any of them. I have not come across any compatibility or speed issues either. A vast improvement over 8 and I think an improvement over 7 too. My wife has a touch screen and I hope to get a new surface so I understand the touch features.
Where are you losing screen space due to touch features?

There is a 30 day rollback option!
It seems there is a setting in Win 10 that will let me roll back. I have 2 more weeks.

I no likey.
There seems to be a lot of embedded advertising in the OS.
Also there is a learning curve to getting around. I miss my XP.
Oh and although it does boot faster, it is NOT that much faster to warrant a new OS imo.
I also dont like the fact that you now have to pretty much rent "Office"
So I just reinstalled WORD 2007 and that works fine with windows 10.
I guess with all new things it will take some getting use to.

Getting dragged kicking and screaming into Windows 10
At our little low power FM station we have 7 computers running Windows 7. Being that the Windows 7 support is ending at the end of the year, we are doing the changes to Windows 10. 2 down, 5 to go.
So far - HATE Windows 10. The file explorer seems to be cluttered up with a lot of irrelevant stuff. Maybe this can be cleaned up. They also seem to have done away with the "New Folder" button at the top.
And it seems that it's back to "Control Alt Delete" to change user.
And I had to use the search to find the Control Panel.

ps - Also have 1 non-internet connected XP machine that is used to record audio off of the broadcast board. Works fine, but it did require some tweaking of our new file server. Not sure what's going to become of Mr. XP.

The new folder button is there on the ribbon, which you may have hidden. If the ribbon is open with no new folder button that's unheard of. There may be a way to set it that way but it's definitely not the default.

Oh, and, the recommended fate for Mr. XP is in a virtual machine. Your may have constraints that make it difficult.

Re: Getting dragged kicking and screaming into Windows 10
I am going to have to bite the bullet myself and upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7. My computer is eight years old and its time to switch.
I have been using Windows 10 for work; that's what my corporate PC runs. After getting used to MSFT moving shit around, it's honestly not that bad and seems pretty stable. Definitely boots much faster. Although that could be attributed to my corporate PC running a solid state drive versus my desktop running a hard drive.
When I upgrade, I will definitely be getting an SSD for my new system.

As JonF noted "the recommended fate for Mr. XP is in a virtual machine" -- this is what I have done for my XP software that I still use. Once set up it is fairly simple to boot up within Windoze10, and I let it maximize it's window so it is similar to the old XP computer in operation and looks. With a little tweaking I am able to transfer files through a shared folder system between the two operating systems operating at the same time.
I use the Oracle Virtual Box.
At our little low power FM station we have 7 computers running Windows 7. Being that the Windows 7 support is ending at the end of the year, we are doing the changes to Windows 10. 2 down, 5 to go.
When I bought this machine it was windoze 8 with touchscreen. In the second week it automatically updated to windoze 10 at night and disabled the touchscreen, as well as completely disrupting any setup I had in windoze 8. I had to pay a geek to get the touchscreen back.
There are two faces to windoze 8 & 10, by I only use the one similar to the old windoze. I consider the other a completely useless waste of ram.
I've also considered installing ubuntu.
Enjoy
