So, is anyone happy about changing from 7 to 10?
Is 10 doing something good for you, that 7 didn't do?

No. It was forced on me and I've never adapted.

Yup. 10 works and is far faster and has been more reliable.

At this point, new operating systems will only do things you won't notice.
They will interface with new technology easier.
They deal with internet and network connections faster/easier.
They are supported to continually fight current viruses/hacks (until they, too, become obsolete.)

The change in user interface is annoying. I wish they'd stop doing that.
Perhaps they are trying to get people to use the "search" feature to find everything on the PC more.
If people started doing that... then the "user interface" changes (on where everything is found/accessed) would mean less on each new operating system iteration.

General consensus has been solidified for a few years now, though - Windows 10 is what you should be using if you have a windows PC. It's the best (Windows-based) operating system currently available, regardless of if you personally like the interface or not.

Edited by Stile, : Clarified "best" in last sentence.

Re: So, is anyone happy about changing from 7 to 10?
It is also much more secure than 7. MS is still putting out security updates for 7, but as this is no longer the primary OS it does not get nearly as much attention.
Security flaws tend to be found by users and outside groups that stress the OS in order to actively find holes in the security. This does not happen nearly as much as with 10. From the onset 10 was much more secure than 7.
With an up to date, reputable, antivirus and antimalware tool Windows 10 is as secure as any other operating system and more so than 7.

Re: So, is anyone happy about changing from 7 to 10?
The interface changes are what turn most people off to most new versions of an OS. But people have to realize that they do not change the interface just to change the OS. A lot of thought and testing goes into OS changes. The 10 OS has shown to be more functional and more liked by more users than other interfaces. New abilities and things like touch screens required the interface to evolve.
As entertainement companies do not market to an increasingly smaller and smaller market share, MS needs to provide products that the majority of people want or need. That majority are a younger group and businesses that needed and desired a more robust OS and an evolved interface.
There are tweaks available that allow a more Win 7 experience on 10. I have a couple Win 10 computers. One has a touch screen. I also have a Surface tablet. With the same OS I can use keyboard and mouse input or touch. Both interfaces work flawlessly. My kids have Ipads, the problem with them is that their OS has almost no provisions for keyboard and mouse input. I feel that OS is in serious need of an interface update. I have no recent experience with macOS so I do not know how well it handles both input types.
Software and OS's change to take advantage of the new hardware and needs of the end users.

And 10 makes it a whole lot easier for MS to hide their own surreptitious spyware/reporting software. Much more efficient for meeting those NSA and FBI requests.

Just to expand a bit on what Theodoric is talking about here for others who may not be aware:

The security provided by Win 10 from "someone who wants to hack Stile" specifically is about as good as it's always been on any other operating system.
If some decent hacker wants to "hack Stile" - they're going to do it, and Stile can't really do much about it.
This is analogous to the same way "someone who wants to hurt Stile" in real life could likely do it if some decent hit-man really planned something out and targeted Stile specifically and carefully.

But that's not what "Win 10's good security" is supposed to protect you from.
Your best defense from this sort of things is remaining anonymous. Nobody "wants" to hack Stile when they can hack Google or Amazon or a government body and do something nefarious to make some serious money.

Win 10's good security is about protecting you from every-day auto-hacks.

The internet is actually full of a bunch of automatic viruses/hacks that just "live out in the interwebs."
They float about, continually trying to hack anything they can for whatever purpose they were created for. Forever. They work automatically. If the hole they are programmed to exploit exists - they will exploit it. If not, they move onto the "next target." More and more of these are created everyday.
This is where Win 10's security shines. It's the best windows-operating system for protecting you against these constant threats. Win 7 is less so (partly because there are less updates for it now, and partly because there are architecture issues that simply cannot be protected with an "update.") Win XP is basically an open book for auto-hackers at this point.

If you walked into any large company (say... Chrysler or Fisher-Price or anything on that sort of scale) and tried to connect to their network with a Win 7 (or lower) operating system - their IS department would flip-out on you. You're basically opening up their internal system to all these "auto-hacks" that are not protected on "under Win 10" operating systems.

It's just the way it works. The effort (time and money) MS would have to put in to protect Win XP and Win 7 as well as they protect Win 10 is just not worth the revenue they're receiving from those product now (basically - none at all.) MS would go out of business. But, the latest operating software sells for new products - so they can spend time and money on protecting the latest operating system.

This ramble has been brought to you by Stile, the letter H, and the number 4.

For example?
Are they doing anything Apple or Google are not?
What is this nefarious spyware/reporting to which you refer to?

I in no way want to seem like I think MS is some sort of ethical perfect company. They have huge issues, as do all tech companies.

I am just curious to what you are referring to.

Re: So, is anyone happy about changing from 7 to 10?
Your best defense from this sort of things is remaining anonymous.

World class, anti-virus, antimalware, software updater and VPN and being smart will protect you from any exploits on your own computer. There is nothing you can do to protect yourself from hacks of government or corporate systems but you can protect the information from coming from you.

Last year my father-in-law received notice that his information was included in a corporate data breach. He disconnected his computer from the internet and could not understand how his data was included in the breach because he had never done anything with the company online. All of his contact with this company was through the mail. It took a while for me to explain that the company had his data on a server some where and that was hacked. Yes though he paid by check, all of his account data was on their server.

Moral to the story. Protect your system. Be vigilant. Examine bank, credit card and credit reports regularly. You cannot protect the data once it leaves your hands but you can protect what is in your hands.

Fine.
So you got nothing but fearmongering.
As I said, I do think tech companies have huge data security issues, but making unfounded accusations does not help the situation.

No. I have one more thing. A sense of humor.

Subtle, maybe, but I got one.

Come'on Theo. Smile. It's funny. A good ol' belly laugh. It's too early in the morning to be so serious. Maybe you need another cup of coffee.

I'll buy.
