Re: misrepresentation
But don't you see the huge difference between these cases? ISIS promotes using their ancient text as a model for current-day behavior. They promote murder, killing, and genocide today.
The biblical case is very different. I do not see Faith arguing for present-day genocide.

You can make that distinction, but however accurate, you totally miss the point, which is that according to Faith, we should not even question the morality of the ancient killing.

And of course Faith judges not just ISIS, but all Muslims on the basis of what she thinks is in the Koran which kinda removes even the distinction you are trying to make here.

Re: YYes Re: misrepresentation
That's the definition of justice. An eye for an eye

That's 'a' definition of justice. It is a particular definition that most decent folks recognize as repugnant. If you want justice, you apply punishment to the perpetrators and not on their innocent children.

Most Christians have no problem identifying that things like massacres of babies and having bears maul children for making fun of beards are difficult and problematic. I've seen many possible explanations for why such things happened, but very few of them as sick as what I read here.

Re: misrepresentation
Also, I would like an answer to my other question : What did the babies do that was so horrific Faith?

Back in the day wives and children were chattel. Their guilt or innocence was of no material value. It was the guilt or innocence of the men that determined the fate of cattle and family.

On that basis we can see that the authors of scripture are attributing their own values to God.

Re: misrepresentation
Scripture is God-breathed

Sure at. But that description not mean that the Bible is inerrant. I agree that the lesson is 'useful for teaching' which is what 2 Timothy says. But I don't agree that the Bible authors managed to avoid writing with human perspective. No other excuse exists for the attitudes about slavery, treatment of women, and other things reflected in the text. Because those things were part of their lives despite being God's chosen people, they have to appear in the Bible.

and not written by human opinion

Impossible to defend the idea that there are no human values expressed in the Bible. Besides that, at this point you are straying quite a bit from what 2 Timothy 3:16 actually says. It is impossible that human values could not be found in a text that purports to describe countless centuries worth of human behavior.

Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given.

Re: Rationalizing Killing
If the Bible could have been manipulated to legitimize the actions of "misquided followers and malicious pretenders" there is no reason to take the Bible seriously at all. It's Bible inerrancy or nothing.

This is indeed the corner that all Bible inerrant literalists carve out for themselves. I suspect we could quote any number of dwise1 posts from the past where he pointed out this situation.

Here Message 34 is an example quote from 2007:

quote:
To my mind, the problem is not about God or the Bible. It's about these people's theology, their Man-made theology. Evolution doesn't disprove God nor the Bible, but rather their Man-made theology. And it's their fallible Man-made theology that demands that their YEC interpretation be true (which it is not even remotely) or else the Bible is false and should be thrown in the trash and God does not exist.

Your cage is of your own making. Neither the Bible nor Jesus require that you live in that prison. You've done it to yourself.

Edited by NoNukes, : Fix quote error
