The EU and UK have reached a post-Brexit trade deal, ending months of disagreements over fishing rights and future business rules. At a Downing Street press conference, Boris Johnson said: "We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny." The prime minister added that although arguments had been "fierce" it was a "good deal for the whole of Europe", driving jobs and prosperity. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said it was a "fair and balanced" deal. Brexit: Boris Johnson hails free trade deal with EU - BBC News Don't know the details, but at least a deal is in place.

the full text of the deal isn't published yet. There are some rumors there are no tarifs that's good since the Brit's have a deficit with the EU. Yea im rooting for the EU. But what i really want to know is what they did with financial transactions packages services and the like. Its where the Brit's are strong, and need a bit of knocking down. And hurrah for the Irish for getting that open border with n Ireland. Wouldn't want any new bombings now would we.

Interestingly, I heard that one of the biggest stickler points was the fishing details. The UK was more resistant to EU boats fishing in or near their territorial waters. Looks like they were eventually able to get some kind of compromise.
And I honestly had no doubts the border with Ireland would stay open. There is so much at stake there, that both sides probably wanted to ensure that remained stable. Incidentally, I started this Brexit thread in June of 2016. Hard to believe it is still alive in December of 2020. Guess the talking heads that continued to say Brexit would be easy were a tad off the mark.

The UK was more resistant to EU boats fishing in or near their territorial waters. Yea so they can tell their people they accomplished something meaningful. But in reality what they gained is 150 million per year more to their economy not allot compared to the British economy. The worst blow to the Brit's would be loosing their financial market, London was kind of the financial Hub of the EU. I thought the Irish problem was well on it's way to resolution, Good Friday and all that.
Now, after a generation, the religious strife appears to be flaring up yet again. Why? Is it religious, political, social injustice, economic disparity, all the above? What is the cause now? Is brexit an element? What is happening with the Emerald Isle?Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

It’s the consequences of Brexit, of course, You have to put a border between Britain and the EU somewhere. And following the land border would be a bit of a nightmare, as well as endangering the Good Friday Agreement.
But putting the border in the Irish Sea upsets the Unionists who see it as a step towards a United Ireland. So their paramilitaries are causing trouble.

We all knew it was coming. It’s been talked about for weeks.
It will be put off while they sort out COVID and get life back to something approximating normal. But when moves start to implement it, things will get interesting. The only good side of it for Boris is that his job looks less of a prize with that business looming on the horizon.

I saw a joke meme on the benefits of Brexit to date. The page was blank.
So why not ask. What is the view of the Brits and Europeans on Brexit now? I know it was panned quite loudly early on. Are you getting used to it? Any surprising issues unforeseen that have reared their heads? I remember the Irish issue and fishing rights being tense but that was expected. Any boogymen? Over here we're on the verge of civil war and for the first time in memory it's looking like the vaunted American experiment is about to fail, the famous American dream having died. So how's things on your side?Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned!

In Sep 2016 I was on a South of Spain cruise out of Southhampton. Almost the entire passenger list was British; so a couple thousand Brits and less than a couple hundred Yanks. I liked the steak and kidney pie, regret passing up the bubble and squeak, really loved the British breakfasts (especially the British bacon; I didn't try the pudding though), didn't dare try the Vegemite. The last-night party was a celebration of British popular music (featuring Beatles and Stones, of course) for which the concourse (an "atrium" that ran the length of the ship -- yes, the inboard cabins had that as their view) was packed; they closed with Monty Python's "Lighter Side of Life" for which everyone held his/her lit cigarette lighter high.
The Brits kept needling us about Trump and we kept needling them about Brexit. Neither side had any explanation for their own national insanity.

So far there have been no benefits and many harms. Business is much harder, we haven't got any of those wonderful trade deals yet and we have a real chance of Scotland breaking up the Union and Northern Ireland going bad.
If we hadn't had the COVID crisis followed by Ukraine, the lack of Brexit benefits and NI disputes would be top of the news everyday.Je suis Charlie. Je suis Ahmed. Je suis Juif. Je suis Parisien. And on top of all that, you're not allowed in to Mont Saint Michel for free any more, if you're from the UK and between the ages of 18 and 25 !
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
