Why did we stop inventing gods?
The ancients were quite good at inventing new gods. The bible shows that the Jews invented many gods before deciding that god could not be defined and settled for I am, as the greatest expression of god. I am as spoken as a man.
A History Of God
Karen Armstrong
Jews, in their oral tradition, gave man the last word in what god and his policies were to be. They accepted that the man they chose as head Rabbi of their Divine council had the power to overrule their written tradition. Man’s words, not an imaginary god, had the final say on policy. Man was supreme and not one of the imaginary gods.
Christianity then changed much of the morals and policies of their newly invented god, Yahweh, and also transferred the power of god to a man. Jesus. Jesus was now placed at the power seat at the right hand of his newly invented god and placed Yahweh in the right hemisphere of the brain, as shown in the art of the day as depicted by Michelangelo in his creation painting in the Vatican.
Islam then invented Allah, and so far, rightfully named him the last god to be invented. Foolish but true to date.
I see that search for a god as a search for the best laws and rules to live life by. After all, we cannot follow an imaginary god and can only follow the laws and rules that those imaginary gods has spoken, recognizing of course, that only a person can speak those laws and rules and that it was really a wise person who was uttering those words.
Gnostic Christians always saw those invented gods, specifically Yahweh, Jesus and Allah, as immoral and not worthy of us and that is why they named those gods as immoral and vile demiurges. This is not to say that those demiurges did not have some good policies but only says that a better god could and should be invented. Gnostic Christianity lost the god wars and was decimated the moment Christianity gained political power which they used to end freedom of religion.
Are immoral demiurges like Yahweh, Jesus and Allah, the best that mankind can come up with?
Why do you think we stopped inventing gods and settled for demonstrably immoral ones?

DL
P.S. Gods are the opium of the people.

"There is only One God."
To each of us, yes, but not a supernatural one. If you have written the laws of god in your heart as Jesus promoted, then that god is you.
Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
If you think the Christian god is the one god, then you should recognize the immoral nature of his immoral tenets. We cannot prove his existence but I can prove him to be quite immoral so pick his moral tenets and lets have at it.
"Lets say that you were that one voice. What do you propose to change the beliefs of many from?"
The whole world has been harmed by belief in the supernatural gods mostly because the mainstream religions grew themselves by war and all those religions are really good at is creating homophobic and misogynous people.
"Again...change it to what?"
The main change I would like to see is a return to what the more intelligent ancients though of god. This scholar explains it well.
What is God? - Big Think
"Do you really expect people to suddenly agree on anything?"
NO. That is why I try to entice people to debate.

Dr Adequate
I am not the one who said that there is only one god but as with humans, we should not expect any one person to know about everything to the highest degree.
If I am sick, I want a doctor. If I am to invest, I want an economist. If my car is acting up, I want a mechanic.
The ancients had various gods for various issues and to expect one god or person to know everything in depth is ridiculous.

frako
To worship Adi Da Samraj is to idol worship the mental construct that the worshiper has created in his own mind.
If one worships any idea, it is to enshrine that idea and no longer question it's validity and in an evolving world, to not let ideas evolve is to stifle our evolution.
Belief in the supernatural gods has slowed our evolution to a more moral people.

"I hear that Apple has come out with a new one... an i-god."
Is that gods morals better than the vile demiurge Yahweh's?
Did it demand his young I-pad to be needlessly sacrificed?
Or did he have the I-balls to step up himself as any good father I-god would?

Re: Who Is The Greatest?
Is he? I do not think so. At least not the way Christians interpret his sayings. The Rome invented one is a pathetic brown-noser that promotes a slave mentality.
I like the more eastern mystical Jesus as he promotes that we be as he was and interpret morality for ourselves.
I put some of his quotes above but this link do them justice.
Alan Watts-On The Book Of Eli
Phat writes:
Is it any less idolatrous to worship ourselves?
I do not promote that we worship ourselves. I do promote that we recognize that to a human, only another human should hold the highest office, just as it was in the days of the Jewish Divine council.
Only a man can speak for god and only a man should be god.
Phat writes:
And we have found a better man than Jesus because.....? Back then "they" chose Barabbas.
So the myth goes. It was that or bring the wrath of Rome down on all Jews.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. Jesus also wanted to die so what do you see wrong with his people giving him his wish?
That is what Yahweh wanted and his wish cannot be thwarted. Right?
Phat writes:
He is Risen. What more do you want?
Then why is he not here since the Jewish myth says that he is to lead them? He was not to levitate away to nowhere and ignore them.

Tangle
The nice thing about having many gods is that the intelligent ones gain support and as it was in the days of the Divine Councils, the best are elected to the highest office.
We do the same now with our political gods and the ancients did not really separate church and state.
To me, separation of church and state is a stupid notion as one cannot leave half his brain out of any decision.

I could do as some and rework posts and change names but I have nothing against freedom of association or speech.
What is wrong in posting on other sites as long as replies and attention is given everywhere?

"On a positive note, it is good to realize that gods are man's invention, and not vice versa."
For sure. That is why I wrote the O.P.
I want to give man the power that imaginary gods have usurped thanks to their priests and imams lying to us about god.

" Do you understand your Messiah..."
I do not.
Please explain why the Trinity god would condemn us and then turn around and say that the only route to forgiveness is that he must die for us.
That seems rather stupid to me.

Re: The Inventor or The Invention?
Phat
Gods have basically always been termed as father.
As above, so below.
Are you as father?
Do you always want your children subordinate to you and never surpass what you are?
I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
Galileo Galilee
You forget this line from Genesis.
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil:
Do not accept your rightful position in the scheme of things if you do not want to but astute students of Christian theology will know that they too can become as gods.

Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a God superior to themselves. Most Gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.
Robert A. Heinlein
I agree with the tail end of that description of the old gods and would add immoral to the comment.
I do not agree that men cannot dream up better laws and rules as compared to the old gods.
Just look at secular laws of today and it is quite clear that we have done better on that score than the old gods.

Not quite. They worship supernatural gods and most of us who create our own natural version of god do not worship what we create in ourselves.
The Gnostic Christian way is that even after suffering apotheosis, we set aside that god, raise the bar of excellence and seek anew.
I advocate allowing all gods, supernatural or not, to continue to evolve their thinking so as not to become idol worshipers and allow our thinking to stagnate.
